Full Version: What should SBC's rivalry week matchups be each year?

I'll take a stab:

ULM vs Louisiana
Marshall vs App State
Georgia State vs Georgia Southern
Southern Miss vs South Alabama
ODU vs JMU
Texas State vs Arkansas State
Coastal Carolina vs Troy*

*Cross divisional opponents, so technically they wouldn't have the same rivalry week opponent each year.

What say you?

Georgia Southern's biggest rival is App and only App. We may have some other schools we love to hate but when it comes to our top rival we only have eyes for you goat humpers.

I would think Ga State and Ga Southern would be pretty heated. What's the history like between these schools?

Pretty much this. If they don’t want to take us seriously that’s fine…keep taking them Ls. The funny thing about them pretending there is no rivalry with us is that there is an official annual rivalry trophy between our 2 schools that is awarded based on head to head performance in EVERYTHING.
I think the OP suggestion allows for the most rivalries to be played the same day. Unfortunately with 7 team divisions one team in each division will be left out.

You could also do Troy and South Alabama for the in state thing.
Southern Miss and South Alabama - What we should have had with Toolame

Southern Miss and Marshall - What we had with East Carolina
Wont Troy and USA be in the same division though? I think if one team in each division has to play a cross division "rivalry" so that the others can have their neat geographic pairings then us and Coastal would have to take one for the team and be each other's "rival".

Maybe for some GS fans but for me I do consider Georgia State a rival just not our top rival. I know that hurts your (and a lot of Panther fans) feelings but so be it. I mean it's OK to have more than one rival isn't it?
It is hard to not have GS vs App and Troy vs USA for top two rivalry games in the conference.

UL and stAte see each other as rivals more than they do playing ULM. UL probably sees USM as number two.

TXST has no one so might as well toss us the other left out team.
Honestly, I don't think it matters that much.

Rivalry weekend is the Saturday after Thanksgiving. Many if not most students are still in their hometowns with family 2, 3, 4, 5 hours away. I like watching App play Ga. Southern or potentially Marshall or Coastal that weekend, but an argument can be made that ticket sales for the biggest rivalry game can be maximized earlier in the season.

No matter which school is played that weekend, the dozens of other rivalry games in the P5's are going to WAY, WAY overshadows anything in the Sun Belt.

Really, it hasn't been the worst thing for App to play Southern in October or early November. The pushback has been more the inconvenience of the midweek game, not as much that it has been mid-season.

Besides, let's be real: a lot of the Sun Belt's rivalry games are going to be the midweek games on ESPN/2/U. Troy/USA, Arkansas St/Louisiana, App/Southern, etc. would all be buried on ESPN + if they were all Thanksgiving weekend.

Such is life in the G5.

Might be interesting to put a poll together to see who the fans want to be their rivalry game each year.
You're new to this so you don't know but the Cajuns and stAte kinda have a thing.

I was just thinking this regarding us and UTSA. If we play them in September or early October it's a sell out, but if we were to do it in November after a 2-5 start then we'd be lucky to get 20K

I agree which is why I would say "rivalry week" would be built and promoted for like an October date; weather is decent for most SBC schools, the season is beginning to get in the mid swing of things when everyone still feels as if their team has a chance at making it a successful season.

I tell you what though my head has been imploding all morning as to what would the 'rivalry week' match ups should be (I constantly am going back to geography vs established rival games).

Not bad. Frankly, Louisiana considers stAte their rival in Football. Lastly, App. and GS are the biggest rivals in the SBC.

Very true. We had good rivalries in the past with ECU and UCF, but they hardly ever won.

In football there’s not much history there yet. We played our first game in 2014 and since then Ga State has the series at 5-3.

There was message board fodder for a bit when Ga State announced they were starting a football team. State fans claimed their location and size would displace a cow college like Southern as the 3rd team in Georgia and eventually they would be the next Louisville. We in turn mocked their failure to launch as a program: the horrible records, embarrassing attendance, and not having facilities to call their own. That’s where the animosity comes from.

The truth is without Ga State starting a program and almost immediately moving to the FBS, Georgia Southern would still be an FCS school in the SoCon. Their move is really what prompted us to reevaluate the difference between the FBS and the FCS. Before we had to compete with State for Atlanta recruits and attention, we were perfectly content to be a big fish in a small pond.
