SEC first for the 12th time in the last 16 years. Big 10 was tops in 2017 and 2019, ACC in 2016 and Big 12 in 2011. Pac 12 worst ever performance by a P5 conference.
SEC 40 14 74.07%
BIG 12 20 8 71.43%
BIG 10 32 13 71.11%
MWC 26 18 59.09%
ACC 23 23 50.00%
AAC 19 19 50.00%
SUN BELT 16 19 45.71%
IND 31 37 45.59%
MAC 13 31 29.55%
PAC 12 9 23 28.13%
USA 13 37 26.00%
Two Questions:
Does anyone see a discrepancy between the fact that the PAC 12 had such a poor OOC record and the fact that the PAC 12 has been ranked 5th practically all season long in the Massey Composite conference rankings?
Can anyone explain the apparent discrepancy?
.
The PAC 12 has fewer bottom teams.
If you look at Sagarin Ratings and break into (rough quartiles) of 32 schools. Schools in bottom quartile (97 or lower)
ACC (1) Duke
B1G (1) Northwestern
B12 (1) Kansas
SEC (1) Vanderbilt
P12 (1) Arizona
AAC (4) Navy, Tulane, USF, Temple
MWC (5) Hawai'i, CSU, SJSU, UNLV, New Mexico
Sun Belt (6) Troy, Georgia Southern, South Alabama, Arkansas State, ULM, Texas State.
MAC (7) Ball State, EMU, Kent State, Buffalo, Ohio, Bowling Green, Akron
CUSA (10) MTSU, Florida Atlantic, North Texas, ODU, UTEP, Louisiana Tech, Charlotte, Rice, USM, FIU.
If the Great Middle was formed from the median ranked teams from each conference, the standings based on Sagarin would be:
Purdue
Iowa
LSU
Auburn
Texas
K-State
WSU
UNC
Nevada
FSU
Cal
East Carolina
Memphis
Wyoming
Ball State
EMU
North Texas
ODU
Troy
South Alabama
The same logical would apply to the MAC being ranked higher than Sun Belt and CUSA, despite UTSA and Louisiana being likely favorites over Northern Illinois.
