No indication as to whether expansion is 2022 or 2023.

"...The four new schools would like to come aboard next year, but there are rights fees and other details to work out or it won’t happen until 2023.

In any case, when the league does get to 14, plans are to continue playing only eight conference games.

The Sun Belt’s primary media rights deal with ESPN has brought excellent exposure and was a big factor in the league being financially more attractive than CUSA, whose schools receive a pittance in comparison.

But the Sun Belt’s deal runs through 2031, and unless ESPN is willing to renegotiate, adding four more schools meaning slicing the pie thinner...."

Poor bullet.
Well when you get those Sun Belt and CUSA people together, it gets a lot nastier than Democrats and Republicans. Kind of a small town vs. big city battle.

Might as well add the rest of the table scraps left called CUSA to the Sunbelt. That flyover CUSA conference is really going to stress test the pocketbook and student athletes are gong to become frequent flyers be default.
For several years I favored combining CUSA West and SunBelt West into one conference and CUSA East and SunBelt East into another. Made a lot more sense geographically than what we had.

Of course, my alma mater (Rice) got the ultimate Hail Mary answered with a move to AAC, having done absolutely nothing to deserve the invite. The new AAC West is almost the perfect conference for Rice--Tulsa, SMU, UNT, UTSA, Tulane, and Navy--every similarly-inclined school in the southwest region, two more Texas schools, and one service academy. Now the only issue is whether Rice will continue to make a hash out of athletics, or will finally try to do things right.
