Congratulations to Tony Annese and his football program on FSU’s first ever national championship.

I am beyond envious of FSU’s athletic department. They have tremendous leadership, coaches in their individual sports, and student/alumni support.

Meanwhile, we have bupkis. Other than Heath, mediocre coaches everywhere. An uninspiring AD. And outside of this message board, not many care about EMU athletics one way or another.

Maybe we take their SC and AD :-)

Good go use the portal and transfer to Ferris St New age board. PS Heath is at .500 right now. Ever hear of Game Above? Your statements about fans and alums aren't backed by facts. Lots of positive developments at EMU on campus.
This post reminds me of years ago when Grand Valley St was winning national football championships and we were really struggling at the FBS level. All the talk of dropping down a level and actually playing Grand Valley St. Thankfully under CC we are no longer at that level. We are improving all sorts of athletic facilities that make Ferris St. look like an outhouse. We still maintain championship status in our traditional sports like track and field and cross country. Our overall athletics graduation rates and grade points across ALL teams is improving and really really impressive. Yes we would like to see more wins in all our programs but the bottom line is we have coaches who care about the right things and great kids out there on the field. People who have ethics and values. Boone Hall and other new academic facilities are being built or remodeled. Our administration is trying to find innovative ways to rub two pennies together to make a dime. Game Above has raised over $25 million to help the campus. Last weekend George Gervin Day was great. The AD hired Heath which is a good move.

Geez folks if all this doesn't make you a proud alum I don't know what will. The glass ain't empty its three quarters full. We aren't going to win many national championships but we can get back to getting teams like women's basketball, volleyball and women's soccer back to where they were and ditto men's basketball.

Yeah I get it after watching Liberty beat us I wanted to wear a bag over my head. Back to work and lets not be different lets be better.

Yep and a lot of this for those who love the Kentucky Derby winner AFTER the race.

Who a priori was a George Mason fan before their Final Four run in 2006. Later Loyola.

All of it is 20 / 20 hindsight. Basically cherry picking a winner AFTER they have won.

Agree with '79. We do a lot with not much. Think I posted that the MAC made up most of the 13 lowest FB assistant coaches pools. We might have been in the bottom 5 out of FBS.

Even everyone's darling, Heath, was signed at a big discount.

I believe Scott and his team are doing very well given that EMU has always operated on a shoestring budget.

Ferris State is this year's "Big fish, small pond." We are trying to become a 'Big fish, big pond." Not easy.
Dear Friends,
Before many of us go crazy over Ferris State and their accomplishment under Coach Annese, just remember when he was coach at Grand Rapids Junior College, he used ineligible players in bringing winning teams there.
If, I remember correctly one player was not even enrolled at the school.
So, as far as coaches go, like leopards, they don't change their spots.

I would transfer if I could. Sadly my eligibility has long since expired.

Game above sounds great on paper. What good has come of them in terms of results? We still can’t afford to buy out bad coaches, like our baseball staff, or add decent assistants (e.g., football). We give mediocre coaches lifetime contracts. Our student support still sucks. Heath is underpaid, and wouldn’t be here if he wasn’t willing to take a “hometown discount”.

George Gervin is awesome. I get it. What of consequence has the athletic department accomplished?

Very true Ken and guess what Grand Rapids eliminated the football program.

You mean like CC has at Wabash, Drake and here and without ineligible players? By the way can you need one MAC football team that has ever played for the national championship?

a buddy of mine was a div 2 player and assistant and he told me that annese is a real dirtbag. not sure he could make it at a bigger school without any investigations.

Game above is an awesome proponent for EMU. The Game Above is a collection of great people who use economies of scale to have a large voice. They will help EMU move forward just need a little time. GA perhaps influence the future of Scott Wetherbe at EMU.

Cow, I'm with Lucky, I like Game Above. No, they are not as wealthy as Stryker or Soaring Eagle Casino but if those two big money ops were close to EMU, I'm sure their donor money would go to the Maize and Blue or Detroit pro sports instead. We are the small fish in the big pond, unlike CMU and WMU. Game Above is our best option.

Your comments about the extension length of Creighton's contract do ring true, there was no reason for such a long term. You once again nailed it when you questioned the Athletic department's efforts to engage the student population. They have done virtually nothing! That said, Game Above did give students a rebate for attending the Gervin basketball game, it was an effort to introduce them to the Convo experience in the fervent hope that they might return. I don't know if it will work, but in any case it represents a positive effort, something that Wetherbee doesn't seem interested in.

As far as buying out lousy coaches, that is not a problem for EMU but the MAC as a whole. The two highest paid football coaches are Candle and Lester, can you name me two coaches who consistently do less with more? Yet they are still employed.

How about MILLIONS OF DOLLARS to support upgrading our basketball facility? Why don't you ask your boy Heath if upgraded facilities are good for his program? Ask if they will help with recruiting?

How about giving MILLIONS to the SPAC? That funding helped get it to the point it is now where most of the $20 million is raised. Not having to allocate those funds to paging off SPAC frees up money to fire coaches or market the program.

How about MILLIONS of dollars to update our engineering programs and the engenireering building to draw better quality students (and student athletes) to our university? I'm pretty confident in saying better academic programs and a growing student population will help our athletics.

By the way, all of the above only happened THIS YEAR (coming after decades of under-investment). I'm sure there is

Having an engaged and philanthropic group of alumni is critical for success at 21st century public universities. Game Above just happens to be the shape ours finally took. I don't mean to say Game Above is perfect or that I'll always agree with their gifts. But I would much rather have them than not.

And hey, maybe they'll help continue the current trend of EMU growing in enrollment while CMU, WMU, and GVSU decline in enrollment.
Due to the constant waffling we love Creighton we don't love Creighton I once again have to raise this point: The SAPC etc. don't get built and Game Above doesn't raise the monies unless Creighton had some level of success here. Also missing is the number of EMU football players under Creighton who have gotten their shot at pro ball and then have given back to the program. Whether you give him credit or not Creighton has single handed moved the needle of the EMU football program. That is a fact. Whether he moves the needle enough for all of us to the next level is open to debate.

Lot of this consternation is coming from Texas....

Most of us haven't changed our opinions on Creighton.

Wished I had authored that post. It pretty much spells it all out.

I love Creighton and am very uneasy about finding someone who could take us to the next level. That said, I am in the tent with Cow and Sam on one thing, the extension of the contract was too long.

Frank, you nailed it. Neither Rome nor EMU athletics were built in a day.

My view is simple: So long as we continue to take positive steps I'm happy.

BTW, on the SAPC. I think EMU athletics is responsible for 12M and most of that has been raised. GA's share contribution was small. Most of what has been raised has been through many sources, givers, etc. I think Andrew Wylie (150k) is the latest big giver.

As I have posted many times, EMU is doing a splendid job with the campus and academic programs. Housing is the next biggie up (as I posted somewhere).

When academics and student 'services' things like housing, health, recreation, etc. get better universities tend to flourish. I know we are O/T (actually O/T to the O/T, Ferris State) but having high quality apartment style housing on campus is important.

That’s a great post ‘79!!! I love CC but we should write him a politically correct email asking him - can we be better?? I think he can do it with some changes to his coaching staff. Let’s Be Better!!
