This. ^^^^^^^^

By the way, adding JACKSON STATE AS #10, would be great for CUSA from both a exposure/competitive standpoint AS WELL AS a financial standpoint.

People ARE talking!!

Going to 10 with JACKSON STATE would nicely put a bow on the conference geographically/competitively and from a marketability standpoint.

Before Coach Prime Jackson State had a 3 win season, a 4 win season and a 5 win season and hadn’t won their conference since 2007. Tons of rumors about FBS schools fighting over getting Prime next year and with him gone I see Jackson State going back to being a decent SWAC team.

I would take NC A&T over Jackson State if we went after a HBCU.

Here is an article found on the Sun Belt Board. Confirmation on some of the things I shared in this thread.

https://www.nola.com/sports/college/arti...47136.html

App State pressed for the league to emphasize shoring up its eastern side, and thus the push for Marshall, Old Dominion and James Madison, which had been considering moving into the FBS for a decade.

“We wanted to do something that made geographic sense,” said App State athletic director Doug Gillin. “When you looked at who was out there, we were able to create divisions that are going to create outstanding regional rivalries on both sides.”

Adding three schools in the East left one for the West. It apparently came down to a choice between USM and Louisiana Tech, which left the Sun Belt for the WAC in 2000 just before the Sun Belt launched football.

Tech athletic director Eric Wood acknowledged there is disappointment in his school’s situation.

“The last few weeks and months have been brutal,” he said. “Not being in anyone’s expansion plans was hard on our fans and alums. So we focused on stabilizing our league, which we’ve done. But we’ll be monitoring the landscape, and if in the next couple of years something happens, we may well find ourselves with options, which is what any institution wants.”

Ha. That ain't happening.

They clearly care more about location. If SMU leaves they make sense.

Austin is Longhorn country. There is no advantage to adding a team in San Marcos. The American would be better served by adding from somewhere else. Nothing against Texas State, it's just the truth.

I could say that about every program the AAC added this round. They got locations not marketz.

No, you can't say the same thing about any of the new AAC programs.... None of the new additions are located in the same market as an FBS Blue Blood. There are only a handful of programs around the country that carry the same weight as the Texas Lognhorns. Bama, OU, Ohio State, Michigan,... You get the point. UNT sharing a market with TCU isn't the same as sharing the same market as the Longhorns. UTSA, Charlottte, and UAB are the only FBS programs in their cities. Rice has to fight Houston for eyeballs but Rice also has more money than they know what to do with. Even FAU being down the road from Miami isn't the same as Texas State trying to grow in the shadow of Texas' Austin market.

WKU looked much better than App who is the darling of SBC. ULL losing their coach will drop down quickly.

Fortunately (or unfortunately) WKU just lost both of their offensive coordinators - 1 to a Sunbelt school, and one to a P5. That isn't a small loss as that offense was outstanding.

Good question for Marshall and Southern Miss. The Sunbelt had been bottom of the barrel for 20 years and 1 or 2 years makes you change your mind?

CUSA 4.0 is better in basketball than the Sunbelt and will compete with the Sunbelt and AAC in football

Really dumb move by Marshall IMO

It took the SBC 15 years and a major reshuffle to surpass CUSA. One league is strengthening its position and one is scrambling for survival.

It’s pretty clear as to which will be stronger.
Who will be stronger depends on who of the two conferences can pick up their game. See we have five strong schools two unknowns and two schools who obviously need to pick up their game. Sun Belt just picked up two perennial bottom teams a good pickup on Marshall and an unknown JMU. But let’s face it the Sun Belt west is a one trick pony. And the East has three good teams.. the Sun Belt can take teams from us but it will not suddenly make them good.

You are clearly not familiar with the state of Alabama. Tuscaloosa is 30 minutes from Birmingham and Auburn is less than 2 hours. Birmingham is a UA/AU city with UAb a distant third. If you wanted in Alabama, but away from instate major FBS schools, South Alabama in Mobile would have been the way to go.
Birmingham is dominated first by Bama, then Auburn, then UGA.

Charlotte is dominated first by UNCCHeat, then NCSU, then Duke, then Clemson, then SC, etc

Dallas is dominated first by Texas, then A&M, then TCU, etc

We can continue…

Some programs are in or near urban locations, but in reality don’t control 5% of actual market share.

Alabama is a very small state everything is close to every place. I'm sure Bama dominates every market in that state, but the city still built UAB a new stadium. Texas State isn't in Austin and UT isn't in San Marcos.

UNT has around 350,000 alums in the Dallas area. Our Frisco Bowl will be a sellout. Texas does have a large following in the Dallas area, but their popularity has fallen off over the last decade. UT no longer has a stranglehold on every market in the state of Texas. They do however still have a stranglehold on Austin. Texas State is just in a unique situation and it isn't a favorable one.
Listening to SSJ justify how UNT is completely different situation than a school sandwiched between Austin & San Antonio like they are not sandwiched between Dallas & Fort Worth is hilarious. And Austin-San Antonio isn't dominated by the Cowboys like the Metroplex. Just wow.

As a university Texas State has a ton going for it better than the school in Denton. it just has a poor athletic department. If their football team had a pulse in the past decade they would have been called up before UNT 9 times out of 10. But the Bobcats continue to wallow below mediocrity.

The first 2 paragraphs are consistent with everything I have heard. The difference is in paragraph 3, with the writer taking a liberty to say that "IT APPARENTLY" came down to a choice between USM and Tech. This is not my understanding. What I've been told is that Tech would have preferred to go WITH USM...not without them. I also understand this would have been USM's preference also.

App State was pushing HARD for 3 in the east...so hard in fact, if the Sun Belt didn't agree to it, they would have left the belt and joined Marshall and ODU in CUSA. You remember, Marshall was EQUALLY dissatisfied with the lack of an Eastern division in CUSA. This is why Marshall (and ODU behind the scenes) appeared to be taking their sweet time on deciding what to do. They waited to see how the "APP PLAN" was to ultimately play out on the SBC side. The scales tipped in favor of the Sun Belt with help from Troy. Troy wanted to play in the west. Understandably, they were not happy having the State of Alabama split between them and potential in-state rival USA playing in a different division. The App Plan (supported by the possibility of scoring the Marshall "brand") solved for that also.

Honestly, it never came down to a "choice between" USM and Tech. USM had been talking to the SBC for several months prior to October's big announcements. Tech only ever approached the Sun Belt AFTER the AAC raid on CUSA, and the imminent move of USM to the Belt.

Regardless of a couple of very vocal fans on here, Tech and Southern Miss have enjoyed a VERY GOOD relationship the last decade, and both would have preferred to continue. Tech has no axe to grind with USM, nor vice versa. This was 100% about keeping APP in the fold, and the SBC West keeping the peace.

UNT's situation is totally different. UNT is the 4th largest university in the state of Texas with over 42,000 students. Yes, we are sandwiched between Dallas and Fort Worth, but the only FBS programs in those cities are SMU and TCU. Both are small private universities, and even combined don't have nearly as many students or alumni as we do. SMU is losing their advantage of being in a better conference, so things are looking up for UNT. TCU may be in the Big 12, but the gap between the AAC and Big 12 is shrinking fast with Texas and OU are leaving. How can you live in Conroe and not understand the dynamics of college football in Texas? Stick to following Liberty.
Why can't UNT sell out Apogee? Is it true there has never been a sell out? With all those alumni and students in the area that has to be disappointing.

It’s a commuter school plain and simple. The students don’t care about athletics.

Yes they have a small good group of diehard fans like Tech and a few deep pocket donors but turning those 42k students and hundreds of thousands alumni into UNT fans has never materialized.

You're not exactly correct there. The one that went to the SBC (Ellis) lost his job as the sole offensive coordinator last season because he wasn't getting the job done. Kittley was the one calling shots this season.

Good post and explanation. You are correct USM and Tech wanted to stay together. Even in talks with the AAC Tech and USM wanted to join together.

ESPN was calling all the shots. ESPN marketing execs told Aresco who to pick to salvage the AAC contract and was purely based on school size, locality and eyeballs.

Aresco presented the ESPN plan to the AAC president “the only way you can keep your 7 million a year is to invite these markets schools and we will only pay them 2 million a year” Essential cutting the AAC contract but not affecting the current AAC schools. SMU, USF, Memphis did not want to but that was the only way to convince SMU and Memphis (they wanted to invite UAB, Rice, Marshall or Tech or Southern Miss)

Once ESPN finished with the AAC, ESPN then went to work on the Sunbelt and pressured them to finish off CUSA.

ESPN wanted a monopoly on G5 with no competition so they can exclusively show G5 on mid week games (killing attendance just look at ULL) and pay the G5 schools peanuts in exchange (G5 schools having no leverage)

I mean, unless you have a time machine and know exactly whats going to happen, no one knows who will come out as the stronger conference yet. 10 years ago, CUSA was viewed as much better than the Sun Belt... No one thought the AAC would survive.

There is absolutely no point in insulting someone for their opinion that CUSA might be better quality. Sun belt will have a better TV contract, but if CUSA does reach its potential with the new addition, CUSA could make the comeback. I know that you want to feel special and want those that are left behind to say we will miss you... But we wont.

Good luck in the future.
