Inspired by Schmolik's "Comparing the University of Pittsburgh to the University of Cincinnati" thread, I decided to start this thread. As a Troy fan and as a Troy student, everything I have heard about IUP leads me to believe that IUP might as well be Troy's University's northern cousin. What advantages does Troy University have over Indiana University of Pennsylvania?? What can IUP learn from Troy so they can be more like them (FBS program promotion)?

I think we should add IUPUI into this mix as well.

Advantages Troy has:
  • Location in a football hotbed
  • Being in a system with fewer branches
  • Being in a system that has a defined flagship, rather than satellite campuses that are all theoretically on the same level
  • Being part of a system that isn't actively contracting
  • Recent championship history at the D2 level at the time of prospective promotion

I see talk every so often on these boards about IUP or West Chester moving up to FCS, and I don't see it ever happening. The northeast just isn't competitive with the rest of the country when it comes to D2 football, and PASSHE is currently a financial mess. Moving up to a higher level is a complete non-starter. PASSHE would need a serious reworking for it to even be remotely possible, and even with the recent mergers, I don't think it's enough.

You can also add SUNY Cortland or SUNY Brockport to this, since they would be in a similar place to a Troy or IUP, just with less emphasis on athletics being D3 schools.
