Full Version: Five years ago, Penny gave us a warning that this could happen

In an interview he was asked if he thought he would be prepared to coach in college basketball, due to his lack of being an assistant in college basketball. he stated, “coaching is coaching. I don’t think it really matters what level it is on. If you can coach high school you can coach college”. That may not be exactly Word for Word what he said. But nonetheless it is what he said.

Unfortunately, Penny is finding out the hard way that it is very different. Every team you play up against can match you defensively. That is not the case in high school. Penny has a hard time coaching offense against good defenses. And now he will not even turn to Larry Brown for help.

Yea, Opie said the same thing when he was hired.. "Its not rocket science.. its basketball.. just got to get great players". Im glad we got rid of him but he obviously learned the hard way as well

It was easy for him to coach in high school. He always had a stacked team. Look at how many players ended up a D1 schools. Same with his AAU squads. Now it's different where the talent has evened out somewhat. We're still more talented but been outcoached.

He was right
Yeah, high school coaches win a lot when they constantly sub and don’t play the best players — 03-shhhh03-shhhh
They were both right. It’s not about X’s and O’s it’s about playing the best players. I thought Penny figured that out on the NIT run last year. Hopefully this is his wake up call but I’m very skeptical at this point.

Our loss against ISU should have been all the wake up call he needed.

Its totally absurd to say he is not turning to Larry Brown for help.

Penny is the one who hired the guy just for that very reason.

There is already plenty of room for criticisms but people keep posting absurd comments about Larry Brown based on nothing but their own imaginations.
I don't think Penny won't turn to people for help.

But I do think he needs a certain type of player for his system to succeed and the ones he recruits are not ready and it seems he is not getting them there.

Granted his offensive and defensive systems seem to be very simplistic...

Switch everything on defense (Simple).

He needs a dynamic playmaker with the ball on offense. Offense needs to change to accommodate the different skillsets he has.

Not saying you are wrong--but the guy that has loose lips and brags about all the $$$ he gives---says Penny has hushed Brown more than once

There is so much negativity and wild speculation floating around at the moment that I take everything I hear with a grain of salt.

Not to mention its sounds totally out of character for Penny anyway. And it defies all reality being that he wanted him to come help in the first place as his mentor.

But I'm sure there are plenty of people here and elsewhere that willing to get in line and swear its true and have a laundry list of "proofs" and "sources".

Until the team starts winning its going to continue.

First, how is it negative to point out the obvious? I love my Tigers and Penny. But if things don’t change Penny is on the verge of destroying everything that he has tried to build here.

Second, where’s the proof that Penny has turned to Larry Brown? Show me the game footage. Show me the play on the court. Show me the footage of Penny turning to LB during a game. Show me LB and Penny even sitting with each other.

There is just no basis at all to say Penny is not listing to LB, much less to suggest its obvious.

Its speculation and innuendo, not a proven fact.

I think anyone with a limited knowledge of basketball and coaching staffs, and the ability to watch the bench during games can see that LB is not being used.

I agree.

While I claim no expertise, it seems to me that without a guy who can breakdown a defense off the dribble, the offense needs to rely on off-ball player movement via cuts and screens.

The Ole Miss game's first 3 minutes were executed perfectly using this strategy. Why the coaching staff and players drifted away from this the remainder of the game is a mystery to me.

Usually seems that what worked in the first half is normally not emphasized in the locker room at half time. Murray State we were killing them with Duren in the post...Had their big in foul trouble and we went away from it.

Now it could be the other team adjusting to it...But I definitely didn't see any change in strategy in the Murray game.
