Next up on Saturday at 1 pm at the Convo Center, EMU plays Florida International (FIU) that sports an 8-1 record, and plays in Conference-USA. Massey ranks FIU the 153 best team in the nation. Bart Torvik ranks FIU 222, and Massey ranks EMU 239.

Except for Georgia they’ve played a somewhat weak schedule. They lost to Georgia in their first game of the season. But don’t be deceived, FIU is an excellent team.

FIU has averaged 74.4 ppg and their opponents 60.9 ppg. FIU has a strong defense. FIU has put-up both good shooting (55.4 percent on two’s, 36 percent on three’s) and non-shooting stats. Half their fga’s are three-balls.

It played and beat Ball State by 13-pointts, 73-60. Should be noted that Xavier beat Ball State by 46 points tonight.

FIU starting line-up is small with the tallest player being 6’8.” It’s highest scorer is 5’8” PG Tevin Brewer., He averages 16.7 ppg. He takes as many three’s as two’s and shoots three’s at 41.3 percent. He shoots two’s at only 43 percent, but manages to take 5 foul shots per game. He averages 5.7 assists per game.

FIU’s second highest scorer is transfer 6’3”’SG David Parrish. He averages 15 ppg, and is a terrific two point shooter. He hasn’t made a three-pointer.

The third leading scorer is transfer 6’4” Denver Jones, who averages 10 ppg, and shoots three’s at 36 percent. He shoots but just 42 percent on two’s. He also averages 3.2 assists per game.

FIU has two terrific deadly three point shooters J Hawkins (16 mpg) and Peter K, (11mpg) coming off the bench.

The 6’8” player who starts is Clevon Brown. He’s an excellent shot blocker, averaging 1.6 blocks per game. Coming off the bench is 7’1” Seth Pinckney who also averages 1.6 blocks per game. As a team, FIU averages 4 blocks per game, the 64th highest in the nation. Brown averages 9.6 ppg and shoots a high percentage on two’s. He shoots three’s at 30 percent. Pinckney averages just 5ppg, and also concerts fga’s at a high percentage.

FIU’s defense is geared to running opponent to their bigs inside inside.

On defense, FIU spreads the court, runs a lot of pick and rolls. Brewer runs the show and is a blur on the court.

Bart Torvik rankings has gone from FIU being the favorite to EMU being favored by a point, and EMU having a 55 percent chance of beating FIU. Massey rankings has EMU as having a 47 percent chance of beating FIU.

EMU holding their last two opponents to shooting a combined
24 percent ((9-37) on three’s bodes well for the FIU game.
During the post Niagara game interview, Coach Heath mentioned that Luka, Binelli and Axel would be able and ready to play. They were out due to stomach virus. We need Luka to keep improving and be a guard who can score at all 3 levels.
It’s my belief that EMUs and opponents stats thru 8 games are not reflective of the current state of EMU ‘s performance.

In EMU’s last two games played against Northwood and Niagara EMU installed a new offensive and defensive system that I feel are more reflective of EMU’s stats.

I realize that Northwood is a Div.2 team, but both Northwood and Niagara stats are very similar, Niagara was ranked by Bart Torvik rating service as the 208th best team in the nation when EMU beat them. Both opponents scored only 57 and 58 points respectively against EMU. The only real difference is that EMU scored way more points against Northwood than it did against Niagara. As Niagara played at a slow pace that resulted EMU scoring only 60 points even though EMU shot quite well on two’s.

Bart Torvik ranks Niagara 208th best team in the nation, a team that EMU just beat, and that is ranked higher than FIU ( Bart Torvik ranks FIU-222, KenPom rates FIU 243)

Bart Torvik has EMU a 1.2 point favorite to beat FIU.

FIU plays only slightly higher pace than Niagara did, and FIU plays
more of a man to man pressure defense that attempts to funnel opponent perimeter players to their shot-blockers inside.

EMU plays at a faster pace than FIU does. It’s Important that EMU does that tomorrow afternoon in order to speed FIU up and into taking bad shots.

EMU scored 74 points against UC San Diego and 79 points against Northwood. FIU is averaging 74 points per game, it’s opponents 60.9 ppg. One can see why FIU is considered to be a better defensively. It plays more of a man to man defense much like EMU does and tries to funnel forces opponents inside to their shot blockers.

Comparing EMU’s stats over their two games to that of FIU reveals that EMU has shot 58.9 percent on two’s, and holding their opponents shooting 45 percent on two’s.

EMU first introduced their new offense three games ago against UCSD and EMU shot 59 percent on two’s against UCSD. UCSD is ranked by Torvik 223 in the nation, FIU 222. EMU didn’t introduce their new defensive scheme till the Northwood game. I believe that if EMU had employed it against UCSD, UCSD would not have scored 83-points but rather 71 points or less.

FIU is considered to play a better defense than it does on offense.

FIU is shooting 55 percent on two’s and has held their opponents to shooting 45 percent on two’s, similar to what EMU’s opponents have shot.EMU should win the battle shooting two’s if they can avoid FIU’s two shot-blockers.

EMU has shot only 27.5 percent on three’s recently, but EMU’s new defense has held both opponents to shooting 24 percent on three’s.

FIU has shot 36 percent on three’s and their opponents to shooting 26.1 percent on three’s. EMU’s new defense should be able to hold FIU to shooting less than 27 percent on three’s.

I don’t see the differential margins on non-shooting stats being a factor in the outcome of the game.

EMU has averaged 14.5 foul shots per game, and scored 2.5 more foul shots per game than their opponents. FIU has averaged 13.6 made foul shots per game and scored 3.1 more foul- shots per game than it’s opponents. opponents.

Even though FIU fouls slightly less than EMU, Since the game is being played on EMU’s home court, fouling is not likely to determine the outcome of the game.

Opponents of both EMU and FIU garner more offensive rebounds than they do and FIU is only slightly better that EMU garnering offensive rebounds, I don’t see the offensive rebounding differential as being a factor in the outcome of the game.

Nor do I see the all-important turnover differential between the two teams being a significant factor in determining the outcome of the game.

I EMU can win this game. I see a path whereby EMU beats FIU, 76-71.
Kent State beat Detroit Mercy 69-52 tonight. Detroit Mercy shot but 25 percent on three’s (8-32).
I’m bringing 10 friends to the game. I hope we play well so we have repeat customers.

You are absolutely the man, Luckey! I remember you came up with the plan to pack the convo a few years back. We never got full coordination on that. But I am glad you are going at it with or without us!

Yes, before Covid19, I brought about 20 friends to a game but we didn’t play well and it was difficult to promote the program. I’m fairly confident Noah will attract a couple big time comparably talented players next year and we will get the Convo to rock. I believe Heath will build a nice program!

If I were in MI, I'd go to the game, bring 10 students (even providing free ride sharing service), gladly accept a share their $75 gift, etc. 03-lmfao 03-lmfao 03-lmfao

I'd tell them to especially watch #5 and #2.
Looking forward to being in the building for this one. Hoping for a lively atmosphere AND a win.

You have to wear white! Otherwise, enjoy!!!
Parking lot is packed. Should be a nice crowd… hopefully they win…
Eastern is laying an (eagle) egg so far.
Well I guess we now know what happens when Farrakhan, Scott, and McBride all struggle in the same game. Woof.
Nice little run. Finally pushing the pace and it’s paying off. Another thunderous dunk by Nate Scott that made the crowd (sans superfan) erupt.
Tied with 13 seconds left. Chance to win it at the buzzer.
Farrakhan gets a great look but rims out. Bonus basketball coming up.
I was going to say that Noah as "Ice" in his veins, but is was a no go.

He’s taking over in OT though. I love this kid.
Abysmal free throw shooting. We should’ve won this game easily. Now FIU with a chance to win it with 3 seconds left.
Students, free admission plus gift card, are getting their money's worth. Lol. 2 OTs.
