This is a HUGE get
Immediate impact level player

Here's a story he was included as a potential impact transfer from LAST January (2021). Where has he been over the last year? I would guess his eligibility clock was still ticking even if he didn't play last year, which would mean he would only have one year left.

I know it's still early, but at this point I'm pretty surprised at how few players we have lost to the portal. We are down seven players who were active and in uniform last year, five who were starters at the beginning of the year and three who were by year's end. I think every one of the players we lost had just one bonus year left, and Moll would have been using a medical redshirt from being injured this past season.

At this point, as far as I know we have picked up four players from the portal, though I suspect there may be others who have not been announced.

So....here's an update on our transfers coming and going. Please update or correct me if I have missed something:

GONE
Rajae Johnson-Sanders (WR) to Troy
Shauntavis Vardaman (OL) to Jackson State (reported in mid Dec but not confirmed)
Kris Moll (S/LB) -
Antonio Moultrie (DE/LB) -
Trea Shropshire (WR) -
Lucious Stanley (RB) -
Tyler Johnston (QB) -

COMING
Jacob Zeno (Baylor, QB, 3 years remaining)
Dexter Boykin (North Alabama, WR, 1 year left)
Jackson Bratton (Alabama, LB, 3 or 4 years left?)
Reynard Ellis (Georgia Southern, LB, 1 or 2 years left?)

Same. I was there 81-84 & we were terrible!
We have significantly enhanced the LB corps. Ellis and Bratton should play a lot.
I am surprised Stanley hasn’t been picked up yet. He was productive.
Moultrie probably ends up at Miami.
Moll and Shropshire may find they have to wait a bit.
Hope Stanley lands somewhere he has an opportunity to play.
I thought Shropshire ended up
Staying at UAB….
UAB has moved on with commitment of UNA transfer from Fairfield.

Not speaking specifically to UAB or any particular player but I suspect academics are a big reason for a fair amount in the portal. Even “grad” transfers. Lots of them dragging out their collegiate eligibility, would be pretty easy to blow off academics this past fall taking classes just to play, and then find yourself in trouble in December if you wanted to stick around for one more year. Guessing a good many of those sitting in portal without offers have some academic work to do in spring.

I think the APR scale considers a 5-year timespan. So, if a player is at a school more than that length of time and hasn't graduated, the school's APR takes a hit...I think.

I am aware that this is an issue with some of our players who hit the portal. The problem is, you have to clear up your academics where you are before you are in position to transfer, but when you enter the portal you cut off all of your athletic scholarship benefits that help you get things straightened out. So now you are stuck in limbo, without a team. And I suspect this kind of thing is happening at other schools as well, so that a lot of kids are making decisions without thinking it through.
Yep, definitely think some players who expected the grass to be greener will instead find their careers are over

Those who are prepared have a destination before they enter the portal...

I think the numbers will drop and level off in a couple of years. Most NFL caliber
kids are gone in 3 years anyway (Junior year or redshirt Junior year). I don't see a young phenom changing schools to improve draft stock once he's on everyone's radar. He may change schools because other issues but not purely changing due to the perception of one school being better than the other.
