missed this last night- but this is something that will absolutely have to be regulated...
I thought the same thing

If had had slid and they tried to tackle him it would be 15 yard penalty

If you are going to give QBs that protection they shouldn't be able to abuse it

Honestly, I'm surprised a QB hasn't tried to do this before.

Yeah. Texas got an unsportsmanlike in one of their later games this year for hitting a QB who didn't really seem to be sliding but slipped instead.

Fake slide means you are down and the spot and a 15 yard penalty?

That seems fair

It should be treated the same as a late hit

Late hit/taunting. It's the definition of Unsportsmanlike Conduct.

That wasn’t much of a fake slide. More like a stutter-step. The Wake coach complained too much.

I saw at least a couple of plays this year that were actual “fake slides”, ie the QB was close to the ground and popped up and kept running.

How the hell are you going to regulate “fakes”? Are we going to outlaw play-action on pass plays because it’s “unfair” to the defense for the QB to fake a handoff and then throw a pass?

The QB after the game said it was a fake slide.

Judgement call just like unsportsmanlike conduct.
Great play.

Judgment call, just like when idiot refs call a taunting penalty after a player pumps his fist to celebrate a sack? No thanks. Officiating needs fewer judgment calls, not more.

This is one where they need it. Its impossible to call the fake injuries, but it is possible to call this.

They need to severely restrict the unsportsmanlike after a good play. A Texas player simply spun the ball after a score and that was a 15 yard penalty.

I saw it.

Yes, a fake slide should be treated like a punt returner waving for a fair catch. You can't "fake" a fair catch signal than catch it and run. Same should apply here, because like the sliding QB, the punt returner is accorded special protection when he signals a fair catch.

It should be a penalty to fake a slide.

I think it should be like when a kick returner does a slight hand wave. He may not have intended to wave for a fair catch, or he may have started to do so but like a batter check swinging, he changes his mind, but regardless, the refs will almost always say he did signal it and mark the ball there, disallowing any runbacks.

So we don't have to get into the mind of the QB to judge intent. If he makes any move that looks like he could be sliding, boom, play over at that point, and for the same reason we do that with kick returners - they are accorded special protections when they make those signals.

This makes a lot of sense. 100% the other direction from your wierd Cincinnati takes, but the "fair catch" rules make a lot of sense here.
1st thought was that it was a great play and shouldn't be a big deal. After reading some of yalls takes tho, it does seem similar to a return man signaling for a fair catch and then taking off anyway.
Maybe the answer is to just remove the rule that allows a QB to slide in the first place. If he becomes a runner he should no longer be treated like a QB. He's an RB.

Exactly. Thats a weak rule. If you run then you better deal with the consenquences.

Ive also been of the opinion lately that kneeling should be penalized. Maybe even spiking the ball, too.

If we're going for an overhaul, can we outlaw punting and kicking as well
