So sick of hearing about the VT vs UVa “Commonwealth Cup” every year.

We need a name for the JMU vs. ODU game that will hopefully be played at the end of every regular season. And I suspect that on many years, one of our two schools will be performing at a higher level than either Tech or UVa.

Suggestions?

yeah - someone came up with what a thought was a good name/trophy a month ago.

Either the "Crown" or "Royal Crown"
VT and UVA rivalry games are so blah.

How is it a rivalry when VT has won 17 out of 18 games? UVA should cancel football and use the money for other sports.
Legend has it that King Charles II referred to the Virginia Colony as his “Old Dominion”. Hence, that nickname for the Commonwealth of Virginia that has lived on ever since.

Or we can go with James Madison, the recognized author of the US Constitution , vs. King Charles II.

Or we can keep it real simple and go with the Shenandoah Valley versus the Atlantic Ocean….

Tech fans rushed the field Saturday night and then planted their flag at the 50 yard line in celebration. It’s absolutely time for UVA to cancel the program.
If using historical references....

Could be a reference to the Spotswood expedition. I believe that started in Williamsburg.

The Golden Horshoe with the original "Sic juvat transcendere montes" meaning "This is the way to cross the mountains".

The Revolutionary War

Civil War

Constitution

References to the 8 USA Presidents.

“Burg to the Bay Trophy”

Nobody likes my (Mountain) Oyster Bowl name, but that is one everyone in the country would at least notice just for the giggles.
Oyster Bowl when it is played in Norfolk. Lots of football history in that name.
Mountain Oyster Bowl when it is played in the Burg.

Have a Giant Oyster trophy and then hang those dangling truck nuts on it when JMU hosts.
JMU says suck Deez Nuts ?
Norfolk & Western (Southern) railroad connects the two campuses. Railyard forms the border of ODU's campus and the tracks go right through ours. Get an old Railroad Bell from them and make it the travelling trophy. Since we'll have it most of the time, we could use it to get everyone into the Stadium by kickoff.

Wabash and Depauw have been playing for the Monon Bell since 1932 and their rivalry spans 127 games. Their trophy is a 300 lb locomotive bell from the Monon Rail Line which connects the two campuses. The Monon line actually gets a mention in the movie "Hoosiers".

I'll leave it to the rest of you to come up with a name for the rivalry.
Democracy vs. Monarchy

I think I’ll second that idea !

Colonial Conflict?
Revolutionary Rivalry?
Clash of Constitutions (Both a reference of US Constitution vs. Magna Carta, also a reference to a clash of competing wills)
There’s an array of political economy references that I’ll refrain from for everyone’s sake.

Only problem is there is still an annual Oyster Bowl game at ODU as far as I know. It's always been a big fund raiser for the Shriners. I went to a Va Tech vs VMI Oyster Bowl about a million years ago.

Me too. Maybe we could get Taco Bell to sponsor it.
Keep it Simple- Purple and Blue Bowl
Call it the Hall of Fame Game. Coordinate both schools Hall of Fame Induction Ceremonies to coincide with the game. Each year the host school can have some high profile member of their Hall of Fame introduced at halftime and present the trophy at the end of the game. It would be cool to have Charles Haley, Gary Clark, Scott Norwood and a few others be the presenter.

Or Norfolk and Western. How cool would it be if N&W ran a train from ODU to JMU on gamedays, and vice versa when the game is at ODU. Great scenery, big bar, and arrive on campus having already partied for a few hours. I'd pay a hundred bucks (or more) for that ticket.
