LSU - Alexandria Generals are a NAIA power, and their guards love to run and gun, gave the Jacks a game in the Sawmill last season, and actually were leading at halftime, before SFA pulled away in the 2nd half.

#25 LSU-A is already 3-0 this season averaging 103 points a game in the NAIA.
Utah and Texas A&M up this week for ACU. Tanner isn’t going to have the luxury of easing into his new role as HC.
Let’s rack up some W’s WAC-o’s!!!

Good luck to everyone OOC! This is where we start gaining some respect.

GO AGGIES!!!

Be that as it may, if you drop this game we're taking down the Davenport Over GCU memorial plaque and putting up a new one.

That’s a tough start, for sure. The good news is you have a lot of returning players who know the expectations. Get it to the last 5 minutes with a chance to win. With your guards and the way they defend, I think you have a realistic shot!

GO WAC!!!
Thanks IndyAg, It is a tough start, but the team will likely not be cowed, win or lose. They are tough cookies. They can be out-talented, but their trademark is toughness. Appreciate your note. I am hoping the WAC wins big opening week. Let's get rolling!!! Take care of UC Irving and UTEP. Rooting for you.

Sounds good to me. I'd love to pass that plaque on to someone else. COGS

NMSU had a similar situation a year ago when they scheduled to play (NAIA) Arizona Christian. It was NMSU's first game of the season but for Arizona Christian, it was their 9th game; going 8-0 prior. Additionally, the game was played on their home court since NMSU was homeless due to COVID. NMSU eventually won the game (83-77) but it was a struggle. Arizona Christian had a quick 5'7" point guard (Angelo Johnson) NMSU couldn't stop. He finished the game with 26 point and 6 assist on our defense. That was the first red flag that NMSU was going to have a rough season.
There are a lot of us that are going to have a tough first week. It should give us an idea real quick on where the WAC sits nationally. Can we hang? Can we win? Will we struggle to keep up? Either way, I think the teams are ready to get out there and get this season started.
I don't expect WAC teams to beat P5 program on their own court. That is a tall order for any mid-major. The name of the game there is keep it respectable. Where the WAC needs to make it presences felt is to win games against our peer conferences. And, hold serve at home. The games listed below are the ones where we have a real chance to move the needle with the national media...

Chicago State vs. St. Thomas (MN) from the Summit League
Grand Canyon vs. Grambling from the SWAC
New Mexico State vs. UC Irvine from the Big West
Utah Valley @ Boise State from the Mountain West
Seattle U. vs. Alcorn State from the SWAC
Stephen F. Austin vs. Southern U. from the SWAC
Chicago State vs. SIU Edwardsville from the Ohio Valley
Grand Canyon vs. North Florida from the Atlantic Sun
Dixie State vs. Southern Utah from the Big Sky
New Mexico State vs. UTEP from CUSA
California Baptist vs. Mississippi Valley State from the SWAC
Lamar @ Miami (OH) from the MAC
Stephen F. Austin vs. South Dakota State from the Summit League
Seattle U. vs. Idaho State from the Big Sky

And, of course, the WAC shouldn't lose to any D2 or NAIA opponents; six of those games being played this week.

It would be great if the WAC can go 12-2 in the games above. I'd take 10-4 but hopefully nothing worse than that. Most of these are games at home and against conferences lower on the totem pole than the WAC.
We do go into our P5 games looking to win. It doesn't happen often, but it did against Texas. We kept it very respectable against Tech and Arkansas. My expectation is to keep it respectable, but also to actually go into the game to win the game and not just collect the money.

Home losses to Grambling or Mississippi Valley State would not look good.

A little nervous about UTRGV vs TAMIU. Majority new team, lots of injuries. New coach Figger openly says in an interview it's man-to-man defense only, immediately followed by giving up 72 points to UT Tyler in an exhibition.

I'm not saying we shouldn't hope for a P5 win. But as a WAC fan we shouldn't "expect" to win. If we win against a P5 opponent then GREAT! It's a big boost to the conference. But P5 wins are hard to come by playing on the road in a packed house against bigger stronger more athletic players. But I will be watching the WAC results (and rooting for our WAC peers) against the P5. It's a good indicator of where some of our WAC programs stand strength wise; leading into this conference season.

I get what you are saying, but we will play to be competitive and to play to win, not to just play a good game and collect a check. Like I said before, I also expect that it will probably not happen as much as our losses against P5 programs, but with enough time, it can indeed happen. In BB, mid-majors do play on the level of P5 schools. IF we can raise the WAC to that level of play, then we will do it. The WAC is a better conference than the SLC. That in itself will be a challenge, but one we face head-on. The elite mid-majors can. Will we be elite? Who knows. Right now, we are just trying be relevant, but we will play to win regardless. To do that, you have to be able to expect to win. This first week is a tough challenge for us. After that, we also have some other good mid-majors to gauge against. We will play to win both levels, or if we play a lower level.

I know our Aggie players expect to win every time they step on the court; regardless of the opponent. As an Aggie fan, I am fairly confident Coach Jans will put our Aggie team in the best situation to win. But do I expect NMSU to win on the road against a P5 opponent? No. But then again, I'm usually not too surprised when it actually happens; very happy though. The good coaches find a way to make their team competitive against the odds. And, I know NMSU has a very good coach. But P5 programs know it as well. That's why NMSU gets very few P5 taker on it's schedule these days.

Nailed it. SFA v SDSU should be an exciting game and a real test of the WAC’s strength.
