I imagine no one will answer this question but why do we always defer? Is there some college statistic that says putting your weakness on the field first and letting the opposing team score is fine as long as you get the ball to start 2md half?

We need to stop defering and put the strength of our team (offense) out there rather than putting pressure on our offense to need to score first possession because our defense gave up a first drive score.
Analytics.

The numbers show that deferring the opening kickoff, over time, results in an extra possession here and there.

Your argument makes sense too. If your defense routinely gives up points on that opening possession, I would suppose the analytics may suggest not deferring. If Hammock is such an analytics guy as he claims, he should investigate the numbers as they apply to NIU specifically and not just the overall general trends.
I'm pretty sure the Huskies won the toss at Toledo and took the ball first.
You should always defer. Try to get a two for one at the end of the half.
Took it 1st at Michigan.

Thought process is hope to score at end of 1st, get ball in 2nd and carry momentum. At worse, down, set tone in 2nd.

I think this was a Belichick thing.

This decision -- like the many others made during the course of a game -- is up to the coach.
As NorthCoast noted: "The numbers show that deferring the opening kickoff, over time, results in an extra possession here and there."
Considering our Huskies have gone from 0-6 to bowl eligible with four games still to be played, I'm willing to defer to coach Hammock.
It just seems counterproductive to put your team in a hole to start games.

I'm just happy we won but 2nd half was a defensive and offensive effort for that win.
It was the CMU snapper who was the MVP for us…

As others have said it's a data analytics thing. IMO we need to shore up the early game defense but continue rolling with the analytics.

Lombardi had 320 yards, 3 TD's, 0 Int's
Ducker had 183 yards, 5.9 YPC
Rudolph had 160 yards, 2 TD's

There were 147 total plays on offense/defense, but we catch a lucky break on one special teams play and suddenly he's the MVP? Not to mention their kicker is 50% on the season from that distance. Enjoy the win and stop focusing on the negative.
Everyone keeps forgetting about Richie. He had a great game too. He made some key plays too to keep our offense on the field.

I thought the call that went against us for holding on Miles Joiner's TD was terrible.

Agreed on both points.

The real running starts at the quarter pole, that is why you defer..

I also remember us NOT deferring. So.... I think he DOES take other factors into the decision.
