If Rice can get into the AAC, Tom Herman would be the perfect fit to return to the city and conference he enjoyed his greatest success.

Tom has always spoken about Rice in glowing terms. I tend to think that if he returns to college coaching, Rice is the sweet spot.

I also think he'd kill it at Rice. He loves Houston more than any other city. Look at how SMU is doing with Dykes. This is a similar scenario.

I realize its pie in the sky dreams right now, and a lot would need to fall into place, but even entertaining a thought like this lets you know that Rice may not be as far away as it can seem.

You may want to have a conversation with UH and UT fans about this bad choice.
Decent (short) article on the possibility and potential upsides of such a hypothetical.

What the article glosses over when mentioning the fall-off at Rice from ‘08 to ‘09, is that the three biggest on-field pieces of the offensive success also departed after that year. Clement and Dillard graduated, and James Casey left early to join Dillard in the NFL.

I wouldn’t mind giving Herman another stint at Rice… but IMO our 2008 success was more about the players than the coaches.

Was sure a fun team to watch though!!!

Here was an interesting account:

"Herman accompanied Bailiff to Rice as offensive coordinator with similar results. Quarterback Chase Clement, with a different kind of skill set, led the Owls to a 10-3 record while amassing more than 4,812 yards total offense and accounting for 56 touchdowns.

Bailiff remembers Herman and Rice assistant David Beaty - now the head coach at Kansas - spending much of the 2007 season researching and working on an up-tempo offensive scheme that wasn't nearly as prevalent then as now.

"We just kept exploring new ways," Bailiff said. "Back then, it was new and hard to defend ... It was actually David and Tom taking the spread and matching what our strong points were."

Herman attracted attention in other ways.

He would get his players attention by riding his skateboard down the long ramp at Rice Stadium quickly. Bailiff had reservations about seeing his offensive coordinator go on the injured list. The daredevil antics did have the desired effect.

"The players, they thought it was great," Bailiff said, laughing.

Herman's success would lead to an offensive coordinator job at Iowa State under Paul Rhoads and then joining Meyer at Ohio State, where he put together a championship-offense with three different starting quarterbacks."

This particular line caught my eye.

The ability to 'match[]' to 'our strong points' seems strangely out of reach for the current coaching staff. Kudos to the Bailiff staff for that which we have now lost.
Tom Herman can stay wherever he is. No thanks.
I doubt Tom Herman would come here, so it's likely a moot point. Additionally, there are some ethical concerns that we'd have to get comfortable with before hiring him.
I don't know anything about the ethical concerns.

I feel like I remember some article that quoted Herman talking about how bad it was to recruit at Rice and having to keep players away from certain facilities.

I have few doubts that Herman is a better coach than Bloomgren or Bailiff.

I'm not sure Herman is the best choice for Rice since we know he would bolt after any success, but I am sure that Bloomgren has had enough of a chance and has not shown any signs of working out. So I would take Herman over the status quo, though I am also intrigued by who the other possibilities might be.
My mostly uninformed choice is Mississippi OC Jeff Lebby. Got Texas ties and been a winner everywhere. And unlike some SEC coordinators, we’d be able to give him a pay raise to come down.
Tom Herman would be a great choice since he has been successful wherever he has coached. I know some Rice players who played under Herman when he was at Rice and had a deep respect for him.

But that implies success, and I'll take that right now...

Herman isn't a Rice guy. He doesn't fit the mold. He'd end up embarrassing the university beyond the W-L record.

Most of those player-used facilities have been replaced since then. While we haven't had the Fertitta-level money UH has enjoyed, Patterson and Autrey are both much better than what football players had access to when Herman left. We still have the issue of a 40k seat stadium chock full of 3k fans and dozen(s) of students, but that's not likely to change before we try hiring again.

This

Step 1, I want a guy who will win
Step 2, I want a guy who will stay.

We keep getting guys who will do 2, but not 1.... and that's the guy I DON'T want

I think we both know a guy like that.

Agreed, but to be clear to some others....

I want 1 AND 2 and we know how that works....
I'll begrudgingly take 1 WITHOUT 2 as an interim...
We seem to keep getting 2 without 1 as an interim

Does “he doesn’t fit the mold” mean he likes to win?

I think the folks in Austin may find out that Herman is a better coach than Sark.

I still consider Chris del Conte a friend, and I think he was a good AD at Rice before moving on to bigger and better things. But hiring coaches has not been his forte.

It means he can be classless and unprofessional, but I think you knew that.

You could have stopped right there, at least without numerous defections from it/a downgrade of it.
