However markets seem to be more important than success and facilities so who knows.
We have a very long history with Louisiana-Lafayette, and know them pretty well.
Over the years, they have had a few opportunities to move “up” and better themselves in perception and competition but they’ve chosen to stay put.
They are satisfied with where they are, and that’s fine. Tech has never been complacent nor satisfied with the status quo. Thus the natural “rub” of our two schools.
They’ve happily resided in the Sun Belt Conference for 30 years (including 20 since they started football), and I’d be really shocked if their philosophy has changed and are seriously pushing to leave the SBC now for the AAC.
I like Tech but when it comes to facilities its a no brainer.
Louisiana would have one of the best basketball AND football stadiums in the AAC.
I was shocked when I saw them both.
Maybe you’re missing my point. It doesn’t matter (and hasn’t mattered) if their facilities are a “no-brainer” — they have never seriously considered leaving the nest they helped build…the SBC.

If the AAC takes two where football is a must, I believe they will take UAB and Charlotte. UAB for all the reasons we've been hearing about. Charlotte because of their market potential, decent basketball, fledging football, and history in Conference USA with current members. The budgets aren't where they need to be, but the AAC schools will likely see budget cuts themselves after the movements are made. Plus, Charlotte would serve as a travel partner to East Carolina, who is likely not to go to the Big XII.
If the AAC takes four where football is a must, I believe they will add in addition to the two mentioned above Marshall and Old Dominion. Marshall for their brand, history with some current AAC members, decent football, and fledging basketball. The AAC would need to lower the budget expectations for a time because the remaining AAC members may not be sitting on $50-60 Million budget abilities with Cincy, Houston, and Central Florida to bring in the conference cash cow. Old Dominion would bring a strong history in hoops, a growing football program, and the largest budget in Conference USA.
If the AAC stuns everyone and adds six. This wouldn't be totally unheard of because they added 8 teams during the 2010-2014 realignment. So if they add six in addition to the four previously mentioned, I believe they will look at Buffalo from the Mid-American Conference and Rice from Conference USA. Buffalo as the flagship of the State University of New York system, largest budget in the MAC just under $50 Million, good football, good basketball, and a decent travel partner to Temple. Buffalo checks quite a few boxes for the AAC. Rice has a private school academic component that many western members on the AAC would like. Members like Tulane, Tulsa, and SMU would very likely favor Rice over Texas-San Antonio or North Texas. They have a history with Rice that I believe they wouldn't mind having again.
Florida Atlantic looked like a strong candidate to be a travel partner to South Florida, but I feel like their name is starting to fall off, and I suspect it may be because the AAC doesn't see South Florida remaining in their league when all the final movements are made.

I think if Louisiana was sent an invite to the American they would accept.
However, I would be content with Tech. I definitely think you guys have the better overall brand name.

Well thanks, I’m fairly sure we’d accept if we could make the $$ work. I have a LOT of family who live in the Germantown/Arlington/Bartlett area, and they all went to Memphis. Obviously it would be fun to visit there and here every year if we were conference mates.

That has nothing to do with Matt Brown. I don't follow him. I see his stuff from time to time, but I don't subscribe to his content. I realize FAU was mentioned early on. I haven't heard anything recently, but I don't live in Florida either. An average RPI in basketball as a CUSA member that is the 200+ range with schedule strengths that rank in the 200-300 range with only one NCAA Tournament appearance in school history in 2002 as a member of the Atlantic Sun I think would be a concern for a conference like the AAC pushing for multiple bids to the NCAA Tournament.
I've carefully read the entire thread and I'm convinced the following are going to the AAC:
Rice, UTSA, UNT, LT, UAB, FAU, Charlotte, Marshall, Buffalo.
That's 9 schools and a total of 17 in the AAC! Great move by them to become the 1st G5 super conference.

Not to put anyone down but Cajun Field is a dump, it's also 11 feet below sea level and floods easy. Ive seen it under water more than once. Ive not been in the CajunDome since the 2015/16 renovations but have been in it many times. Unless the whole facility was renovated, that includes concessions, bathrooms and locker rooms and not just seating then it is probably still just adequate at best. But then again just like the FedEx Forum, the Rajin' Cajuns do not own the CajunDome.

I guess if he just keeps talking he will eventually land on the right number. The question is when does he run out of money to keep pulling that lever?

You can’t say you are convinced, you have to say “it lines up with what I’ve been hearing, but I can’t say anything more…” And keep in mind the ellipse is important.
Somehow I see the AAC taking UAB and standing at 9. They can have an 8 game conference schedule while waiting to see how other potential candidates do over a few more seasons.
I miss the days when we used to talk about the east breaking away and forming their own conference.

ESPN analyst just said on Thursday they are in once again ..
All teams have concerns. I highlighted Marshalls on here. Small market , bad academics , dying city and state in population. Charlotte has a 15k football stadium and hasn't show much in the sport .UTSA has facilities worse than ours in basketball and baseball and haven't won as much in football.
No one from cusa is perfect. Not even UAB.
