UMass is just so far geographically.. Can't see the Texas and Louisiana schools being wild about them..

How would Rice feel about SHS which in their backyard, about 65 miles north?

ODU, JMU, and Liberty feels like a Virginia overload..

I know schools like Jacksonville St, EKU, and Kennesaw St have all made rumblings about eventually going FBS.. Kennesaw State in particular is in a huge media market and is located in the fertile metro Atlanta recruiting grounds.. Having a presence in GA has really opened up SBC recruiting in the state..

Yes independence has meant bottom 25 recruiting rankings with similar results. Our attendance will always be weak, but given some success the numbers will turn. Not only did the students stay for the UConn game, they rushed the field. See the end of the highlights.

Kennesaw State has an interim female president, and their last president was also a woman. Those comments are from years ago, and he is long gone..

Our chancellor before the one who just retired said we'd never get football while he was chancellor and he was right. Now he does shots at the Normbulance pre-game.

Oh, good. Maybe they can experience real change then. I didn't know that guy was already gone. It was only a few years ago.

It doesn't matter if they are "interested in joining the AAC" or not. It won't happen. The SBC schools are already under contract with ESPN for roughly 500K each, and the AAC schools are under contract with ESPN for $7M each (or whatever it is). Why would ESPN allow the SAME teams they have under contract for 500K to move to the AAC and have to pay them more $$$?? Won't happen.

CUSA schools are the best targets because they are not already under contract with ESPN. Moving them to the AAC is a net gain for ESPN.

I was leaning in that direction for a while---now I wonder if thats a factor at all. Given that the CUSA deal is up for grabs in a year---ESPN could have the whole thing--or certainly first tier position---for 10 million or so. Thats about what it would cost them just to move a team or two the AAC at 7 million a pop.

Since it would be another year at least before any team could actually move to the AAC---Im starting to question if the "dont raid any ESPN properties" factor really has any bearing at all in how this plays out.

You still think the AAC will continue to get about 7m per school after defections? Ill believe it when it happens.

Of course not. Nobody believes that. I think most guesstimates are between $2M and $3M per school.

Even Craig Thompson doesn't believe the number will be that low.

“They have been told simply by the departure of those three schools, their average annual value drops to mid-$40 million,” Thompson said of the total AAC payout. “The Mountain West is $40 million. It’s a push. So you’re not going there for TV money. What are you going there for?"

https://www.sandiegouniontribune.com/spo...rado-state

Unless you believe Thompson was giving a ceiling number for the AAC (and I'd bet given the context of that article at the time that's the floor) that's higher than 2-3 million per school using basic math.

So why wouldnt western AAC schools join the MWC if the money is the same or better, closer travel, better rivalries? They might add to the MWC payout too.

Because travel is not better for them in the MWC. There is this really weird thing about not knowing how maps work, but Dallas is closer to Tampa than it is to San Diego, San Jose, or Fresno. Dallas is closer to Philly than it is to Boise. The closest school to SMU in the MWC is New Mexico at 650 miles away. Just for comparison in the AAC Tulane (500 miles), Tulsa (250 miles), Memphis (460 miles), and Wichita (370 miles) are all closer. UAB if added is even slightly closer at 640 miles away, and then obviously if a Texas school is added like Rice or UTSA that's another school closer. I do not understand why those of us in the east just assume everything west of Texas is basically California. Colorado is a long way from the pacific ocean, it's a lot closer to Texas than it is to California. Everyone who thinks the CSU/AFA geography made no sense don't seem to understand that by comparison it made a lot more sense than moving any of the AAC schools west.

From every angle, media speculation is predicting a minimum of 4, and up to 6 CUSA schools getting invited to the AAC and Sunbelt.. That would leave an 8 team conference strung out from El Paso to Virginia..Where does the conference turn to backfill some of these predicted departures? Has the conference brass been in contact with a school like Liberty? What potential FCS schools would be targeted for a move up?

A well thought out re-alignment thread could sort this out.

The funniest thing about this is categories like “Donor Support”. I wonder how we make a judgement off this? If only we had the donation figures of every school. Oh wait we do.

Like UNT is #1 in “support” but near the bottom in actual contributions.
