You have the ball at the 14 with under 3 minutes to play and you've gashed the D to get in the red zone and UVa is down to 1 timeout with 1 minute and change to play and you're second and 10 and you essentially kneel twice losing 6 yards and kick a last second 30 yard FG when you could have likely scored a TD? And the FG looks like it gives you a win and keeps you under the spread too? Hmm. And last week it was an SEC coach so I'm not picking on the ACC. This is why I quit watching Pro ball.

I was wondering why Miami played so conservatively for the last one minute. It’s not like a FG is a guarantee. Well, they deserved to lose.
Well that's the last time I pick Miami...

Quote:Many wondered after week 1 if Miami vs. FSU might be a competitive game, and it’s looking like it will be.

I won't claim to have said that... but I wish I had!

I had the same feeling, only I thought they were trying to hit the sweet spot where the underdog covers the spread but doesn't win. If they had made that field goal that's exactly where they would have been.

But I had UVA to win, so I was pleased with the result.

This is the #1 reason why I hated allowing gambling on college sports. Even if we don't know that happened in this case, it's inevitable.

Also, I'm mad that Miami had UVa on the ropes and didn't finish them off.

In the pick em I had Miami to cover but when I bet money, I took UVA to win.
I didn't stay up long enough to actually watch the finish, but it looks to me like Diaz, who is at his core a defensive coach, didn't have any confidence that his team could keep Virginia from scoring if they got the ball back.

And, while I'm not inclined to presume the worst of people and think somebody was shaving points, the sport doesn't benefit from the perception that someone might be. In the end, Miami got what they deserved even though the outcome for bettors was the same whether he made the FG or missed it.

The thing is, Diaz was playing the odds. Statistically, it was the right thing to do to run down the clock and then kick the field goal to win. Most kickers make it from 33 yards (not, if you want to question the QB kneel down that lost 2 yards, ok - even 1 more yard would've been enough as it turned out).

The outcome was the same for betters who bet the spread not for those who took the either team to win on the money line. Had Miami made that field goal, I would have lost my bet.
Friday:
Iowa -4.5 @ Maryland

Saturday:
Pitt - 3.5 @ GT
Cuse +4.5 @ FSU
Duke +17.5 @ UNC
UL +7.5 @ WF
LA TECH + 19.5 @ NCST
BC + 14.5 @ Clemson
Cincinnati - 2.5 @ ND

TN +3.5 @ MO
AR +18.5 @ GA
AUB +4.5 @ LSU
UCONN +13.5 @ Vandy
AZ ST +3.5 @UCLA
NV +5.5 @ Boise ST

Tie Breaker: Total Points scored in the UCONN @ Vandy game. 79
These are the two biggest tossups on today's card (according to our fellow Pickers). Exactly half of us picked Syracuse over Florida State and half picked UConn over Vanderbilt.

Most heavily favored is Boise State, picked by 15 (out of 16). Close behind are Arkansas and UCLA with 14 each. Only two of us picked Virginia to cover against Miami also, and they would have covered even if the Canes didn't miss the field goal at the end.

There's a lot of football to be played today, so don't hurt yourselves binge watching.
Like I said .... not sold on the GT secondary.
GA and TN rolled and covered today.

UVA +3.5 @ Miami - There's no "D" in Cavaliers.

Friday:
Iowa -4.5 @ Maryland - I could see the Terps covering, though

Saturday:
Pitt - 3.5 @ GT - could go either way, also
Cuse +4.5 @ FSU - wrong team favored?
Duke +17.5 @ UNC - Heels win, but will they cover? Nah
UL +7.5 @ WF - Louisville bus hits a speed bump
LA TECH + 19.5 @ NCST - too much celebrating to cover 19.5
BC + 14.5 @ Clemson - will Clemson even score that many?
Cincinnati - 2.5 @ ND - wrong team favored?

TN +3.5 @ MO - Vols are STILL overrated
AR +18.5 @ GA - Dawgs win but don't cover
AUB +4.5 @ LSU - remember when this was a big game?
UCONN +13.5 @ Vandy - Huskies' Super Bowl
AZ ST +3.5 @ UCLA - Bruins are actually pretty good
NV +5.5 @ Boise ST - Smurf turf worth a TD

Duuuuuuuude...

So far we haven't done well when we all like the same team to win. Maybe UCLA can bail us out tonight, or we will be 0-4 in the "slam dunk" games.
I still can't believe anyone thought State would cover.

La Tech got screwed against Mississippi State, and their coach is Lou Holtz's son. Skip had been passed over twice for head coach at NC State so this was a personal game for him. We ran it down their throat most of the second half and they still had a play to tie it up at the end.
With 4 games to go:

Texan Mark and zibby are tied with 7 each.
random asian guy and myself are tied with 6 each.
XLance, Chris Lords, and copycat are tied with 5 each.
With 2 games to go:

TexanMark and zibby are tied. their final 2 picks are the same. If LSU or AZ St wins, zibby will win with the tie breaker of 54. There were 58 points in the Vandy - UConn game.

If Auburn and UCLA win. I would win with 10 correct.
For the second straight week, I have proven unable to populate a spreadsheet correctly. With the help of ken d, I went back and double checked everyone's picks. I had several wrong for zibby and a few typos as well.. Now that I have double checked everyone's picks....

Congratulations to TexanMark who won this week with 10 correct picks.
I placed second with 9.
Third place goes to Chris Lords with 8.

A shout out to gts who hit the tie breaker right on at 58.
