UAB vs Jacksonville State (FCS) drew 841k on a Weds night. G5 ratings are generally going to be best on non Saturdays where there is little competition.

True

I don't really care about the TV numbers for App. and Marshall. Were they impressed and should be congratulated for, is the attendance for the game. Most mid-week games for G5 teams do not have good attendance. The App and Marshall game had very good attendance and was electric. That means more to me than TV viewership.

I agree and in fact, I think a good crowd/atmosphere such as that also helps keep the casual fan tuned in if they stumble on the game.

Surprise post of the week, 180 from the hot takes last week.

Thanks! It was a great environment. The Wednesday night CCU game will be interesting to see how much of a difference a day makes. If App can beat GA St and ULL before that game it may be replicated.

It does for sure. That's what the MAC struggles with because only hardcore college football fans can view their mid-week games without falling asleep or changing the channel. Mid-week football has ruined the MAC, but some G5 teams have thrived in that format. In my opinion, if App and Marshall meet every year then it would not have the same environment, or viewership that it did last week. It actually helps them that they're not in the same conference together. The same can be said for ULL and Tech. Of course this is just for football and not any other sports. Tech and ULL play all sports every year besides football, I'm not sure about App and Marshall.

Not true for Marshall/App. We have a long history with them and a nice rivalry with them. The atmosphere would have been even better if the division championship was on the line.

Same can be said for Ga So to a lesser extent for Marshall fans. Marshall/App/Ga So all shared the Southern Conference together and the three of us dominated the conference for a long time.

I don't believe it. I can guarantee if you end up sharing a conference together it will only go downhill after the 1st year. It's like the old saying, "How can I miss you if you never go away". If you start playing every year it will lose its luster and just become another mid-week MAC game.

You can think that if you want I suppose. App St is a much bigger rival to us than anyone in CUSA ever thought about being.
App/GS has passed the test of time.

The key is to both stay relevant on the field. The day of the week won’t matter.

I have no doubt App is your biggest rival after last week. However I don't think you can continuously generate the same environment or excitement as you did last week, if you start playing every year. Maybe at first, but it'll fade quick and just become another conference game.

We had that same environment when we were FCS back in the 1990s. We would definitely continue that same environment while sharing a conference today.

Not flaming at all, but Marshall and Appalachian States rivalry is different than LaTech’s rivals. Of course, whether you or any other LaTech fan or Cajuns fan would admit, our two programs are each other’s only true rival.

It has faded in interest because LaTech, rightfully so, ended that annual rivalry. LaTech was committed to succeeding at all cost. While Louisiana’s administration put a stranglehold on athletics. The rivalry became unbelievably one sided. To the point that LaTech lost interest or a need for it to be continued.

Marshall and App has never waited in striving for success in football. So their rivalry has remained intact and competitive. It will continue to thrive if played on a yearly basis.

If I could give you some good reputation, I would. This seems to be a pretty good write-up of the football relationship between our two schools. I will disagree that were each other's only true rivals but that's just splitting hairs in how I interpret "true rival".

Based on history, culture and size we are without a doubt rivals. And that's not even mentioning the hate between ULL and LaTech posters across CSNBBS. It's obvious there is a rivalry there and I think it showed when our schools have played each other recently. I have said on Latechbbb in the past that ULL is a natural rival of Tech.

I even made a post one time saying our schools could work together. We split up the the University of Louisiana system. We take the schools in the north and you take the schools in the south. We get to be the flagship of the Louisiana Tech system and you get to be the flagship of the University of Louisiana system and finally put an end to the name controversy. Also you have to help us take LSU's medical school in Shreveport (they keep their other med school in NOLA) and maybe we'll help you get a law school?

Well some good thoughts here. The way I see it we should have always been working together towards a common goal of chipping away at the lsu dominance. That’s why all the fighting against us being UL is playing right, and I mean right, into the hands of lsu. There is no reason why this state can’t have those 3 names. Like every other state. That hurts of both of us and I’m amazed that the admin at LTU have never seen this. I will also say that lsu will never ever give up the Med school in Shreveport. But another one is definitely needed and LFT has the infrastructure to support it, but that no doubt would involve lsu so not so sure that would be something we’d really like to see lol.

ETA:I should say that lsu would never give up the s-port Med school to you, as long as you are not in the lsu system.

Changing names doesn't chip away at LSU's dominance, restructuring the higher education system does. Name changes would be a byproduct of that. It's like painting a crown victoria to look like a race car. Until you restructure its motor and supports, it won't win a race. It just looks nice parked next to the other cars.

As for pulling away the medical school from the LSU system, yeah its just a dream and obviously highly unlikely, but that's why it has to be worked together if it's pursued. If ULL works to get it pulled away to the Tech university system, LaTech will work and fight to get you a law school in your system. Win-win scenario for both schools and LSU system can still come out on top as they would have both so it could be swallowed by the LSU backers in the legislature. Again I know, almost impossible, but we can dream and try to derail this thread more we want

Marshall and East Carolina managed to keep the rivalry going when both were in C-USA. The games had a very similar atmosphere and are the only Thanksgiving-weekend games that I can remember drawing ~25,000 fans. A lot of those games were back when Marshall was basically at rock bottom with no shot at the division.

Seems to me the best way to get 1m sets of eyeballs on your game is to be on ESPN Mothership on a weeknight, or play Marshall.
