Butch flopped at Tennessee and then had whatever that todo that was. Tuberville never coached again.

Go through the list of guys hired away from the AAC, not the Big East. It isn't pretty.

It could be argued that he never coached while he was here...but I digress.
On a serious note, assuming that we have the success we all think we will have (i.e. a "Top Ten" ranked finish with a NYD6 Bowl if not a "Top 4" finish with a CFP playoff...much less a CFP Championship), it would do UC well to take the initiative and call Fickell up and seek to renegotiate the contract...with a hefty raise looking ahead to the B12.

You don't make the man come to you; you reward his success.

I heard IU’s coach makes $5m. Fickell makes $3.4m. Still early, don’t know how the bowls play out…

Short answer... As much as he wants. Period

I started this thread early with the hopes of watching the discussion progress. I suspect by year end people will be offering their first born

Bolded, I agree and I trust Cunningham based upon what he's accomplished in 2021 to do everything possible to keep Luke in the fold--a job that just got a little easier with impending P5 status and revenue.
I wasn't quite sure where to put this so I figured this thread was as good as any. This is a post on the UConn Boneyard board about the UC-ND game and I think the UConn fan is right:

"Kelly is kind of in a pinch with the Cincy situation. He wanted to play that game as he needs the attention for Ohio recruiting particularly the southern Ohio Catholic leagues which have long time provided ND a ton of talent. He loses and now Fickell can tell a recruit we went in and beat ND. Fickell is already landing some of those kids before they beat them. I just wonder if he(Nd) schedules a rematch. Fickell is on the threshold of having kids looking to play for him which given the job and the situation 5 years ago is almost unfathomable. It's got to be one of the better coaching runs for a first time guy in recent memory. As tough as that loss to Georgia was in the NY bowl, it looks to have definitely helped with national perception. They have a much better chance this year of making that CFB if they run the table. It would be nice to see as I think it helps all of the other underdogs, and i believe Fickell does it the right way."

As I said, the UConn fan makes a great point about CLF being able to tell recruits we beat Notre Dame at their place, why go there instead of UC? The recruiting is about to pick up.

Back up the Brinks truck. We probably have to stagger it, particularly for next year while we are still in the AAC, but if Luke and Amy want a raise give them a modest one now, but tell them it will go after we move to BXII and we will continue to add to it over the years as we get a 100% share of the revenue from the conference.

As I said before give him a laddered contract that increases as the B12 money kicks in. But I repeat unless OSU or ND opens Fick is here for another 8-10 years. The Bengals job could come into play but Taylor is on solid ground right now. Remember Mike Brown lives down the street from Fick.
It goes without saying that every effort has to be made. Go with a 10 year fully guaranteed deal. Bump the salary a chunk next season. Escalate it when the Big12 revenue comes on line in a few years. Make the buyout mutually beneficial, something that protects UC when it's time to hire but also a figure the OSU/ND types wouldn't hesitate to pay.

Do that and figure out how to get the indoor facility done in the short term. Time for the all in play.

His brother plays for ND. He also already released a top 5 before UC even offered him. More of a why not offer since his best buds are all committed to UC
His dad is Lorenzo Styles, who played with Fick at Ohio State. Styles is also the linebackers coach at Pickerington Central, where we have grabbed several guys the past couple classes.

Thanks for sharing that nugget from the UCONN board; I bet there are some long faces in Storrs these days among those who believed UCONN could build a successful enough football program to earn a P5 invite. That possibility seems like ancient history now.

Bolded, I agree the B12 membership has to factor into any deal that gives Luke what he deserves financially to make a long-term commitment here. Do we have any idea, any timetable really, as to when media negotiations will occur with the re-configured B12? I guess job one right now is knowing exactly when TX and OK will exit.

Thanks for posting this & Thanks for the info, Chad!
Talking actual numbers, it looks like 5 million is the ticket. Frost makes 4.8 at Nebraska. Day makes 5.7 at OSU. Ferentz makes 4.8 at Iowa. Stoops makes 5 at UK.

According to USA Today Fickell is currently making 3.27. I'd like to think we could raise that money privately but if not the school absolutely needs to come up with a way to pay the man.

If the numbers are true and our TV deal goes from around 7.5 a year to 25, it seems like an absolute no brainer to just eat that cost for a year and then stagger it to pay him even more once that money starts coming in.
I have a feeling that making more money isn't a priority for him. He doesn't do commercials or radio spots like some other former UC head coaches. If he did, he would be a hot commodity in this city with people knocking down his door. I've never seen a TV ad or radio spot with him. He's content with what he does. I'm sure he likes to be able to go out in public and not be heckled by fans and autograph seekers.

I wouldn't count on a guy to not want to be paid comparably to his peers. The highest paid coach in the new Big 12 according to USA Today will be Gary Patterson at 6.1. I think having a budget of around 10 million a year for the entire coaching staff is more than comparable and doable and puts him into that echelon that seriously makes you wonder why you'd leave.

I agree with you that he doesn't seem overly money motivated the way Butch Jones seemed like he'd leave for a 500 dollar raise, but I'm sure he wants what everyone else would consider fair compensation.
What Fickell "wants" is guesswork.

However, his agent will fight like hell to get as much money as UC is willing to pay him. If UC is willing & able to pay $20 million, Fickell will get $20 million.
Everything I've heard and read, he doesn't have an agent.

Oh yeah, I forgot about that!

Still though... the point stands that he'll take whatever is offered.

The only question is: does the money go to his bank account or does it go to build his program through higher assistant coaching salaries, better facilities, etc.

He got an agent last year. That saving said it all boils down to what motivates Luke Fickell. Does he want to make an insane amount of cash or is it more important to go down in history as a Frank Beamer/Bobby Bowden type guy who took a program with limited success to new heights after a storied career. We’re going to have to test this every year as long as he is here. This far it appears he is leaning in the Beamer/Bowden camp but sometimes the money is too good.
