Drexel Athletics was nominated for the prestigious John Wanamaker Athletic Award.

The John Wanamaker Athletic Award is presented to the athlete, team or organization which has done the most to reflect credit upon Philadelphia and to the team or sport in which they excel.

I recall Drexel's men's basketball team winning the award back in 1996. This year, the entire athletic department got nominated due to their success in numerous sports.

Pretty sure Harper will win that without hesitation for the season he is having. Not sure how many around Philadelphia even know Drexel made the tournament.

what kind of season is he having? i'm not paying attention because mlb is boring and the phillies aren't a serious contender.
hes 0.311 with 140 hits, 33 HR, 93 runs and 80 rbis with 89 bb and 13 steals. So its a very good year. But it is in a sport thats far more popular within Philly than Drexel basketball. All voting things are just popularity contests and he is the bright spot for the Phillies.
i couldn't fall asleep last night so i put the phillies game on my phone. these games go too late and i don't know how anybody can follow them night after night.

it was the bottom of the 8th with 1 out in a tie game and harper was on 3rd. he went home without hesitation on a ground ball hit right to the second baseman who was playing in. he was out by a mile.

i woke up a few hours later and saw they won. everybody was fixated on harper's face when he scored the winning run. our standards are too low. we've gotten so focused on numbers that we don't appreciate when the game is played the right way. i blame espn who emphasizes stats too much and doesn't even show a decent highlight anymore. all this analytic stuff is garbage. i finally gave up on listening to sports talk radio going to work because i'm tired of hearing about aaron rodgers all the time.

you're right...harper will win the popularity contest. i'm just sad about what pro sports in particular have become.

Booo. I dropped your reputation level 1 point for your last post. Don't worry, you post a lot of good stuff here so I'll give it to you back and more at some point.

Baseball is my favorite sports by far, and I do follow the Phillies every night, even when they suck. The game is still exciting, but I agree that they are going on way too long. I try to get to bed by 10, and it's hard for me to go to sleep not knowing the result when the game was close. I was up until the end last night for the exciting conclusion.

Harper is having an insanely good year, except that his RBI's are down a bit. I heard recently that he's at the bottom of MLB with coming up with runners on base, so that's part of the reason why. He is overly aggressive on the bases, which is sometimes good and sometimes bad. Last night, the O's walked him to put the winning run on base because they were afraid of him, and it cost them.

Why do I have a 2 reputation haha? Does BMF have a better reputation than me haha?

The O's can't pitch to anyone and get them out, so putting Harper on hoping to be able to get a lesser hitter out is the right move. The orioles are horrendous, especially in late innings. Just look at their past week for evidence of that.
to be fair and call out another team i'm tired of besides the phillies...

how about the sixers and this ben simmons nonsense?

we will never know the real truth about what's going on behind the scenes...which is why i didn't have much of an issue with naomi osaka trying to skip press conferences. they're generally useless.

but why in the world would the sixers want to keep him? i tried to buy in on the guy last year. i got his shirt and hoodie. there is no way to defend him after what happened in the playoffs last year. 30% free throw shooting is just a lack of effort. i don't know who the bigger idiot is in the whole thing...the sixers for trying to keep him or simmons himself who comes off as an arrogant jerk now.

i get tired of all the drama and trying to be sold on players. it just keeps ratings up for espn. harper is a nice player. don't get me wrong. whether he wins the mvp means nothing to me though. i read an article that said it's a strange year in the national league because the good teams are winning with depth.

imagine that! winning by building a team with young players who actually fit their position...then sprinkling in some veterans! phillies don't have the payroll like somebody like la. it would be nice if they could actually develop a good player out of their system. i was spoiled when i was overseas and saw the carp put together an entire nucleus of players through their farm system. phillies did that in the 2000s...but even those guys took a while to finally break through and reach their potential.

Here is why you keep him, for now. The Sixers tanked for years to get a players of his level, and paid him a crap load of money. He hasn't totally lived up to the hype, but is still an all-star player. His value is rock bottom right now, and they won't get #1 draft pick quality in return. Also, the Sixers cannot let the inmates run the asylum. If the Sixers trade him for bottom value, then he wins and the Sixers lose. If Simmons gets his way, then every player can pull his baby crap when his feelings are hurt. The Sixers need to ride this out. If he doesn't show up to work, he doesn't get paid. If he wants to get traded, then he needs to suck it up like a big boy, show up to work, show the world that he's still a superstar player, and when his value increases, then the Sixers might be able to pull the trigger on a trade.

And back to the Phillies, they made a lot of mistakes with front office personnel over the past 12 years. After they won the world series, they could have hired Mike Arbuckle as their GM, but instead went with Amaro, who made numerous mistakes, capping it off with the failed Cole Hamels deal. Then they hired Matt Klentak who was Sheldon Cooper running a baseball team. They haven't really produced many all-star calibur players from their farm system, and that's why they can't get over the top. Deep pockets from ownership is the only reason why they even have a slim shot at contention right now. Otherwise, they'd be the Orioles.

i'm no expert in what his trade value would look like...and you're right it's probably nothing for him right now. i guess one bright side if he holds out is the team is better without him. one way another he should never play a game for the sixers again. he's an all star player in name only. i gave him the benefit of the doubt...mostly because he's australian and played at lsu...but i'm off the bandwagon now. i thought he could do all the little things people don't appreciate these days...like pass and play defense. you have to be able to shoot to play guard in the nba though.

i would love to see him be some kind of success story where he figures out how to work. that doesn't seem to happen these days. it feels like it'll be another source of drama which i'll hear about every time i turn on my radio or espn. the aaron rodgers situation sorted itself out...so now they have something else except actualy games to talk about.

I actually think that the only way that he gets traded is if he actually comes back and plays. People act like it's a big deal that he'll get booed by Sixers fans if he comes back. Maybe so. But Philadelphia sports fans are also very forgiving. If he does come back and plays at an all-star level again, not only with the fans stop booing, it will also increase his trade value. Holding out does nothing to help get this resolved. If anything, it saves the Sixers money in the short term.
