Why does Rice play Texas in football?

Is the money that good? Wouldn't an additional (only) preseason win provide more value?
They have played almost 100 times.

They play not because it is easy, but because it is hard
Maybe they should stop playing.
When JFK asked that question, Rice had gone 9-9-1 against Texas in football in the previous ~20 years.

Since 1966 (including tonight’s game), Rice has gone 1-43 against Texas in football. 1-43. One W and Forty-Three L’s.

Hey, it’s their football team. Let ’em do what they want.

Maybe if they unlanded on the moon it might give them a boost?

LOL. Maybe.

I’ll say, though, that if Rice beats Texas again, it will be only slightly less incredible than what happened with Apollo 11.

You lack an understanding of economics. They probably got paid between $1 to $2 mil for that game.

Rice devolved from its once-great heights into the skanky, skeeze type of Wendy:

The full Why Does Rice Play Texas speech (which really should be known as the speech when JFK announced we would put a man on the moon before the end of the decade).

I saw the other day (I think on the 59th anniversary of this speech?) that this particular September 12th is to this day the hottest overnight (and early day) temperature the city of Houston has recorded for a September 12th. I want to say the low temperature overnight was like 82, so you can imagine how hot and steamy it was when JFK gave his speech.

To me, the most amazing thing about this speech is that all the big wigs are wearing suits (and the ladies are dressed up too). In the background, I think that might be the Rice band (or some high school band maybe). But they too are in outfits that today's youth would be miserable in.

Americans back then, the Greatest Generation, were a tougher lot than my generation, the Boomers, and more so, increasingly, than every generation since.

When the Greatest Generation had kids, I believe they wanted to ensure that those kids would not have to endure the same sort of hardships (WWI, Prohibition, Great Depression, WWII, etc.) that they had endured when they were young. That was an understandable and positive goal. Unfortunately, the pendulum swung too far in the direction of luxury and laziness. And that has continued to the present time.

I couldn't agree more with that analysis. You must always have balance.
