Full Version: Candle is a terrible game manager

This team will never be anything special with Candle as the head coach. He might be a good/great recruiter, but he doesn't know how to manage the clock and the team has too many delay of game penalties coming out of timeouts. This team often plays undisciplined football, and the 11 penalties for 99 yards in the ND game was Exhibit A for that.

He's 18-15 in his last 33 games. He's done absolutely nothing without Campbell's recruits. Why is he still UT's coach? Does he have a ridiculous buyout?

Better than any team I've seen in the MAC right now! You think any of the players made any mistakes? I think they played their hearts out. I like what I'm seeing from this team and staff. I still think the biggest issue is the OL, but I started to see some real improvement yesterday against a good front 7. I like Candle and the team.
Go RRRockets!!!
My crew at the game discussed Finn going down before scoring... tough ask and where withall to think of that scenario. We had about 20 penalties (bunch were outgained and declined) that were infuriating. Got to clean it up... But its the biggest stage of these kids lives. Idk man. Candle is pretty hard on the kids. False starts and defensive holdings could be teqnique and moment penalties, but i think the staff has done a pretty good job!

We are leaps and bounds above the MAC! Anything less than 11-1 is unacceptable with our talent. CMU is our toughest game remaining probably. We took id guess a borderline top 25 team with top 5 talent to the wire at their place. Those things we saw you "didnt like with Candle" arent exposed against many other teams. If they are, youre Ball State or EMU getting blasted. So if you hate it here... pick another team in the MAC you like more.

Just asking what level were you a head football coach? One thing about the penalties at the end of the game. That always happens at ND when they are losing at the end of a game. Can't say this about most of them but the one PI call was bogus.
I'll weigh in by chastising everyone! :)

The level of the MAC is not even an argument. Apples to apples is salary and only salary. Find worse coaches making more and better coaches making less. Your crew? NEVER mention "your crew."

Unless you started posting at 12, you've got to be 30 by now. I'm looking at you Boca.

Whether someone is or was a head coach is irrelevant, unless of course that million dollars comes back into play. It's a message board. Cop-out argument.

Claiming an end of game penalty cost the game has the standard retort, shouldn't have been in that position to begin with.

Come-on, who honestly thought our D would hold up as well as they did, let alone carry the game? No unit on that field, not our O, not ND's O, not ND's D, played as well as our D. Am I wrong? And unless I'm forgetting something, our special teams on both sides played pretty well also?

As for BS penalties, I thing we got a swap on that. Just previous they got a very similar call against and it didn't look like their guy interferred, space between as both dove. Maybe he did a jersey pull before the ball was released?

Bradley's got a gun. Dug up some turf on that second to last drive but fortunately that drive came out an Offensive TD anyhow.

How are we on injuries, anyone know?

That's right. The refs always bail out Notre Dame. UT was guilty of no actual penalties.

Where is your mind? Can't follow a thread? What I posted
was positive about the staff and players. Man you need to get yourself together? I said nothing about salary and
said the Rockets are the best team I've seen in the MAC
so far. Reread the thread slowly, very slowly. No apology
needed.
Just an FYI

About 10% of NDs tackles came from players recruited within about a 3 hr drive.

About 10% of UT's tackles came from players recruited outside that 3 hr drive. Far outside. That's good player development, no?

Theres quite the academic requirement for that school. But thats a good stat. Id say comparing our roster to EMU or BG is more.telling. Having guys who pick us over Cincy, MSU, Kentucky and WMU feels the most rewarding.

I had to reread my post to figure out what you were talking about, lol. Sorry, I was refering to "crew" and in a joking manner to utoledofans. I know you're at least 31. 03-wink

Exactly. I purposely worded that so it would take some thought. UT competed with mostly local players against a nationally recruited team. Honestly, even I was surprised at the extent of the numbers, how much our D was manned by players within Cleveland, Chicago, Cinci and Detroit and how much theirs was manned by ocean border states. And yeah, there's an academic requirement but not too many football players get rejected whether it be ND, Michigan or whereever. I imagine a quiz bowl would come out just as close.
To Candle's credit, in the presser after the game he did not use the usual cliches. He actually expected Toledo to win. Apparently he motivated the players to also think they would win. If Toledo runs the table and goes undefeated the rest of the season (which I think they should) Candle may be a hot commodity for a big time program.

By the same token, a lot of up and coming coaches would be glad to take over the reins here if Candle leaves.

I felt Campbell and even Beckman left too early. I think it might be best for all if Candle did move on after the season.

Insults can be taken too far! Can't you just wish him some indigestion?

Heard Coach Candle at DTC today and he was very honest in his assessment. We played well enough to win but didn't have it in the end when we needed it. As for the officiating...he said 1/3 of the calls helped us, 1/3 of the calls helped ND and the last 1/3 had no impact. The 'take a knee" crowd..."We don't coach for that". He is holding these kids and the staff accountable to grow from the loss with an increase of confidence but still needing to get better.

He started out by saying "I'm really disappointed, the kids are dissappointed and I know you all are disappointed as well". But we are better because of the way we played the game and we need to keep up the pressure on ourselves this week and beyond.

I think we have a good staff and I would be surprised if we have a let down vs. CSU. Key will be to extend it to BSU, CMU, and WMU in the MAC. Have a good feeling about this group. He also brought Bryant Kovacs to talk to us. What a mature and enjoyable guy. We have him for another year if that works out. Certainly good news.

Go Rockets!! 11-1
Am I a loser because I'm not all that disappointed?

dis·ap·point·ed /ˌdisəˈpoin(t)
adjective (of a person) sad or displeased because someone or something has failed to fulfill one's hopes or expectations.

Can't say that happened for me. Mostly I came away hoping those last quarter injuries weren't serious. Honestly, I'm not convinced ND is all that great but I do trust that their recruits are some of the best in the country and ours executed even up.

And the other 104 (?) spots on the roster? 03-wink I'm sure we have more than one player with an "P5 level" rating out of high school but we all know the score. Our players played up, way up last Sat.

I haven't seen anything published yet but with the close FCS and G5 games the P5 is having, I expect someone to do the age numbers due to the covid. I wonder how UToledo's average age and college experience compares to that of ND's team?
