When was the last time a CPS prospect came for a visit and what was the last Huskie MBB that came from the CPS?

I know that there a few that think the CPS is overrated and it can very well be, but the bottom line is Coach Burno is re-establishing recruiting lines that never should have dried up in the first place.

Probably for a school like NIU (who isn't getting to top tier prospects from CPS), Chicago kids are on par with any other kid from any other metro area in the country. It's not like average CPS kids are on par with top tier kids from St. Louis or Milwaukee.

So yeah...the importance of recruiting Chicago is probably overblown.

With that said, Drane is fine. He's nothing overly special. The kid from Whitney Young he made an offer to (Amos) is much better.

How many High School recruits did Monty get the last 2-3 years of his Reign? He was strictly using the transfer portal for recruitment and wound up with stalwarts like Tavon Jones or Big Red's favorite Anthony Crump.
We should not be fighting for table scraps.
We should have mutual interest of a 2 star player from Milwaukee and a 2 star player from the CPS and a 2 star player from Indy etc.
I am not saying we are going to get these recruits, But
we should at least be in the game to get them

I think people don’t realize some of the politics involved with AAU and CPS kids. I’m happy the lines of communication are open but I hope there isn’t a leach on the other end trying to profit from a kids talent.

You bring up a good point, you would have to be a savvy recruiter to handle CPS and Chicago area AAU coaches.

Very much so and I'm sure a coach at a place like NIU just didn't see the point to bending over backwards for guys they could get from almost anywhere else in the country.

Monty was supposedly making a push to target the suburbs and got Cole and Cochran in his 2nd to last recruiting class. Why he abandoned that in his last year was probably a Hail Mary pass to try and put juniors on the roster instead of inexperienced freshmen knowing he was in the last year of his contract and the only shot he had at getting an extension was to win the conference.

Wow did that backfire. But, I don't think going out and adding 3 or 4 freshmen would have saved his job either so I kinda get why he did it.

It was self-preservation and one avenue was high risk/high reward (the JUCO transfers) and the other wasn't going to help him at all.

Either way, yeah, it's good the avenues seem to be open(ing) and there's actually some decent enough players coming out of charter schools that maybe it's not quite as political/crooked as it was 20 or 30 years ago.

And yes, Patton not only chose not to go that route, but he chose to carpet bomb all roads leading to the city on his way out of town which was monumentally detrimental to the program and one that Monty never was able to overcome although, I'm not sure how much benefit he saw in trying to.

Monty recruited a lot from Michigan and Wisconsin and started to turn his eye toward the suburbs (but probably too late....definitely too late). I mean, why people think the key to college basketball success is in CPS is beyond me. There are as good, if not better kids all over the suburbs and in places like Rockford, Danville, Peoria, Bloomington, Champaign, the Quad Cities and farther south in the state. There's always a few premier players who went to Duke or wherever and then the rest are just guys. A 2* recruit from Chicago is still a 2* recruit.

I was looking forward to a 6 foot three point guard but the Huskie website indicates “2020-21: Did not see action after having knee surgery prior to the season.”

It was just an on going joke in the basketball recruitment thread that there was no contribution from Tavon for the whole season he was here. I think we were hoping for something from him since he was a 3 star prospect out of HS but he is now on his third college in 3 years.
Probably a little hard on him than he deserves.

Our first Illinois top ten commitment since Abdel Nader in 2011. This is really a huge get following Keshawn Williams. Xavier Amos is the 4th ranked forward in the State of Illinois by Chicagoland PrepHoops. MaxPreps ranks him #6 in Illinois. It appears Coach Burno has changed the direction of this program dramatically.
