Big 12: ESPN conspired with American to take “3-5” teams to AAC. Story up soon.

Brett McMurphy
@Brett_McMurphy
Big 12’s “cease & desist” to ESPN claims network contacted other conferences "encouraging” them to take Big 12 schools so Big 12 dissolves, eliminating grant of rights, sources told @Stadium. If Big 12 implodes, ESPN not responsible for final 4 years of deal, worth $1.06 billion
This is why the AAC was so confident they'd be doing the taking if there was any taking of teams to be done. This may backfire, bigtime.

This is exactly what I was talking about when I said the B1G and ACC would take whomever ESPN told them to take.

So you guys are unable to discuss this matter under a gag order from the Mouse. Gotcha.

Seriously though this is some shady stuff going on which we all kinda knew but to see it right out there like that is, hell, I don't even know.
I thought there was an inordinate amount of AAC raiding the B12 opinion articles for such a ludicrous idea. **** indeed did just get real. Im going to monitor this situation with a big bag of popcorn
So if it's true that espn, which has contracts with both the Big 12 and the AAC, actually conspired with one to scuttle the other then that sounds like it could be very expensive for espn. I hope so anyway.
clt says fox is already preparing a lawsuit
This only happens because ESPN is so close to having a monopoly on college football, and they want it all. Greedy punks. I'm glad they got caught.

What I will say is that most of you want to get in bed with ESPN even though they have clearly indicated no serious interest in CUSA. I can't stand those f'ers! They are pretty much ruining college football unless of course you're in the SEC or B1G.

ESPN prevented the Big 12 from expanding two years ago. What does the Big 12 gets for being obedient? Ripped apart by ESPN. Now some will say it's just business but ESPN has been dirty af for years now so good for the Big 12 even though it's probably too late to reverse the damage.

I agree. To hell with ESPN! I hope the Big12 can legally take them to the woodshed over this.

I totally agree. ESPN has way too much say in the direction and outcome of college football. This is why I was angry when Banowsky sold the Heart of Dallas Bowl to ESPN, and why I've been a proponent of C-USA establishing our own conference network. ESPN only manipulates college football and in the end everyone will lose.
It's sticky either way. Most of the kids you're trying to recruit are not watching facebook or stadium, for that matter. They are watching ESPN. Our lack of being on there is telling them we don't matter. But it's definitely making a deal with the devil. I think the G5 will struggle without them and their money, as we are.
Go to CBS sports.com for the latest from Dennis Dodd or his twitter @dennisdoddcbs

His second story now says AAC was conspiring with espn to take ALL EIGHT Big 12 teams suggesting (wink) that the AAC would be "rewarded" with future TV proceeds. In other words a big increase in the current espn-AAC contract if the AAC would poach the other current BIG 12 members.

This would save espn over a billion dollars over the next four years since they would not have to pay the current BIG 12 contract. Bowlsby claims "tortious influence". A legal term for intentional interference with contractual relations.

This second story "broke" about 11:00 p.m. Central tonight (Wed.).

If they'd forced the hand of any P4 conference to do this it probably would have been over before anybody caught them. Using the AAC to poach the Big12 was a pretty bonehead move. The first guy says no, wtf, and then blows the whistle on them.

The only way ESPN can save any face now is if they force the SEC to hold off taking Texas and Oklahoma for 4 years so they get some return on their investment in the Big12 and then not renew any media rights with the Big12 at that time. Which is probably what they're doing right now. And they're still going to pay out the nose if this lawsuit pans out.

This is racketeering. They can trace these moves back to the previous alignment. People will have to testify. We all know it happened to get rid of the Big East and then had the basketball schools take the name and run so they didn't have to honor that agreement, either, without the premiere Big East football and basketball schools. The AAC was born of Satan's seed, lol.

This going to get really ugly for ESPN. Bowlsby called them out for losing revenue every quarter and they are trying to consolidate conferences to save $$$
So maybe Marshall and UAB go to the Big 12 now that they're pissed off at the AAC. I'm sure WVU will help us get in. lol Wouldn't that be great if the AAC teams just screwed themselves out of that opportunity. And never being able to schedule one of those teams again.......ever. That would really screw over Houston and SMU and probably Tulane. So many implications to this mess.

AAC fans think they were going to be the fifth power conference. They don't realize they are about to be sued for conspiring to break up a 3rd party contract worth a billion dollars. They could actually be disbanded in bankruptcy and ESPN will be just fine. That is probably why ESPN used the AAC. They're expendable and greedy. They're actually making up pods that include Big12 members on their board. It's the best comedy in a long time how delusional they really are.

That changes things a bit. If your taking all 8 teams—nobody is being left behind and damaged. Your basically proposing a merger. I’m pretty sure proposing a merger is not torturous interference. I could see FOX having a better case than the Big12.

I’m curious how much money ESPN was putting on the table for this merger. I would think it would take a lot of ESPN’s money to get all 8 big 12 leftovers to join the AAC.
All this shows just how disastrous the spurning of ESPN was for CUSA. The ESPN-affiliated G5 leagues in our footprint have prospered (AAC and SBC) while we have declined. This league committed ritual conference suicide and has never recovered.

I think this ends badly for the Big 12. Bowlsby seems to be negotiating scraps for the Little 8 about to be relegated to the AAC and the ESPN “Chevrolet” broadcast division. Meanwhile, Texas and Oklahoma move to the “Cadillac” broadcast division.

Will programs like Clemson be happy with the “Buick’s”.
