GLI is happening - https://wmubroncos.com/news/2021/7/23/me...ssHxC6jxmc

It is a Showcase format this year, played at Yost and Munn, and there will not be a champion crowned.
This is some bull****.
What a joke. Why even call it the GLI?

At least we get a gimme victory against Sparty's sad hockey program.
Don't want to crown a champion because it goes back to Kalamazoo every time we're invited?
Why did MTU agree to this?
It's not the GLI anymore then
Horrific news today, compounded by the complete lack of detail as to the reasoning behind such a decision. When all four parties basically put out identical terse three paragraph statements announcing the decision at 5 pm on a Friday, you know something is fishy.

How did they not even bother to try to have Van Andel Arena serve as host? How they don't even bother to at least have a tournament at two sites that are an hour apart from each other is beyond me.

I bet LCA wanted Tech to pay some ungodly sum of money for a pair of dates and Tech wouldn't do it. Shows how much Mike Illitch with JLA meant to keeping the GLI alive through its late lean years.

How pitiful would it be if Tech keep half of the GLI tradition alive of playing a pair of games against MSU and UM without a tournament? Lame. Super lame.

What a sad, sad day for college hockey in Michigan.
They probably want Michigan- Michigan State as their premier title game, but Sparty has been in the 3rd place game 7 of the last 8 years, and Michigan 5 times.
ScUM is gonna be tough to beat this year.

Round 1, picks 1, 2, 4, 5 overall were all wolverines…….

Yep, why even call it GLI. No bracket, no championship game or consolation game, not at one site. It's basically just a couple routine OOC games that are scheduled.

Hopefully UM loses a bunch to the world juniors therefore not playing in this dumb version of a GLI. They look loaded though
Fear of the Broncos.....:ha ha...isn’t it great

Who cares? Let’s beat both those suckers on their ice.

JFC, didn't know that. Never seen that before. The 90s glory teams never had that going for them.

That game in AA this year would be great to attend.
Here's my GLI post mortem. Mike Illitch kept the thing alive in the 2000s when he needed the dates at JLA and was willing to give charity to Tech and College Hockey at the Joe. Once they moved out of JLA to LCA, renting ice at LCA became a strictly bottom line focused endeavor and the GLI was drawing terribly. Chris Illitch doesn't want to pay to have the GLI at LCA at the expense of Pistons or Wings games or other better drawing events. It's that simple.

Doesn't help at all that one of the two major draws of the event, MSU, has been terrible since 2010 and also draws terribly. And Bally Sports doesn't air the games as they used to. Hell Fox Sports Detroit in the late 90s and early 2000s used to show every game. Now the GLI could only get the title game broadcast and for a few years it was internet only, I believe.

I went to three GLIs in the early 2000s and they were great. We mostly went to get away from our parents and party, but it was still memorable. We stayed at the Ren Cen. Had fun at the hotel. Had more fun at the games. Ate at Pizzapapalis. Had friends from metro Detroit come down to visit us. It was a blast.

The world has changed tremendously since the late 80s and obviously college hockey has as well. And not for the better, but it is still the way it is.

I can't believe they couldn't get this thing in van andel or in Saginaw/Flint/Plymouth for a neutral venue

A school has never had more than 3 players selected in the 1st Rd. They had 5 & 4 in the top 5.
Van Andel is booked Dec 30/31 with High School basketball and a Griffins game. I would love to see WMU try and replace the GLI with a tourney at Van Andel going forward.

Most of those guys played last year and they managed 4th in the conference.

Obviously this is more talent than usual but they are always one of the most talented teams in the country and it doesn't seem to translate to domination all that often lately.

Also wouldn't be shocking if one or two left before next year.

so basically Um and state get to more home games. MTU and western get to be the suckers agreeing to this mess. MTU needs to get this thing back and boot the two bullies and rotate 3 teams every year, but that won't happen. $$ wins again.
