Quote:Instead of guessing what will happen, what do the players think about the conference? How do they feel about playing midweek games and what are their favorite places to play in the MAC? The Athletic polled half of the 24 players at media day, representing 10 of the 12 teams. and granted anonymity so they could speak freely. Here are the results.

Dear epasnoopy,
What are, or is, the criteria for least favorite place to play? Facilities, losing record there, etc?
I couldn't get rid of the black box, stopping me from reading the article.

“Eastern Michigan. The gray field, it gives me a headache. When we played them, I was tired and sleepy. The field made me tired.”

“Eastern Michigan, because it’s small. The gray turf is interesting but weird. The track around it makes it feel like high school.”

“I like Eastern. I don’t mind the gray field. The away locker room is terrible, but I’m not worried about that. I’m worried about winning.”

“I have some bad memories at Central because it was cold, and we had a long walk from the locker room to the stadium (while the football building was under construction). So that threw me off, having to walk like five minutes. We had to walk through the indoor and stuff like that.”

“BG. Just don’t love their stadium. The weather is always bad too.”

“Buffalo. The weather is always cold and windy, there’s a track around it.”

“Central Michigan or Bowling Green because of their locker rooms. It’s not necessarily about the atmosphere, but those locker rooms are so bad.”

“Eastern. That little locker room is not good. The gray turf is just weird, but it’s the locker room. It’s like a garage.”

“Kent State. The visiting locker room is bad. It’s bad.”

“There’s no true bad, but the one I would say is Eastern because the turf is different. It takes time to get used to. Watching film, it’s definitely different.”

“Probably Bowling Green. It’s always cold.”

“Ball State because the travel is far. The stadium is good.”

Most of the players complained about EMU's gray field. One said it gave them a headache and they thought the track around the field was high school-ish.
Dear epasnoopy,
Thanks for providing the statements. I know the visitors locker room is as old as the stadium, so it probably could use some remodeling.
I find it interesting that a Buffalo player complained about the track around the playing field. Unless I am wrong, doesn't Buffalo have a track around their field as well?
The weather comments are a little odd. It's almost like BGSU is in a tundra microcosm.

Although I swear every time we play at NIU, the weather is absolutely miserable (doesn't help that it's almost always a late November game).

I don't like EMU's 1950-TV-Set field at all. But if it's making opposing players feel "tired and sleepy," they may be on to something there.

The oldest joke on campus is that it is "Blowing Green." The land is flat, there aren't many trees on the edge of town, and there always seems to be a breeze in your face that got its start in Nebraska.
Don't have an athletic subscription and as a fan been to Buffalo and found the group there friendly. Did have a bottle of Single Barrell Jack with me and that could have helped. Next year if things go as planned will visit #1, the Glass Bowl.
I think it's telling that Chuck Martin got four votes and no other coach got more than one for that question. Dude is far from perfect and he's had his share of on and off-field blunders, but you can tell he cares about his team 100% based on his words, actions, and how his Miami teams never quit.

Well he does have one of the longest tenures now so makes sense.

NIU's visitor's locker rooms are bad too. Our stadium is probably one of the worst in the MAC because the last big upgrade was the east grandstands in 1995. Huskie Stadium is in need of at least a $20 million renovation.

Oh without doubt, DeKalb and Huskie Stadium weather in late October and November is no fun. Huskie Stadium is on the west end of our campus (although the Convocation Center is even further west) and beyond that is pretty rural so there's nothing to block the strong winds.

Here's is what the players had to say about Chuck Martin.

Quote:“Coach (Chuck) Martin, he’s a good guy, I can tell the kind of coach he is. Playing against him, he did a lot of things I didn’t see, attacked me and exposed me as a freshman. He had a great game plan for us.”

“I would say Chuck Martin. I’ve seen what he’s done at Miami, turned that program around and won a lot of games in the MAC. I’ve heard good things about him.”

“Probably Coach Martin. I’ve talked to him a little bit. He was at Grand Valley for a while, seems like a cool guy.”

“I’d say Coach Martin. He recruited me and he was cool.”

Losing record after 7 seasons in the MAC. One decent season.

But the CFN lists them as 2nd highest conference winning percentage in the MAC East over a five year span.

Of course, being the second choice of too many prospects, and that would make it harder to climb up further from second in the division, fifth overall ... but it's definitely a turnaround from where Miami was before he came.
One of my favorite questions about Rynearson (for posters here):

What color should the track inside Rynearson Stadium be? (blow up the stadium isn't an option)

1). Red. Tracks are usually red.

2). Green. Let it blend with the sidelines.

3). Gray to match the playing field.

4). Black which is a neutral, but dynamite color.

5). My school in the East and I could care less...

Green. But ideally you could take out the track, lower the field, extend the stands down so the seats are closer to the field, and blow up the corner bleachers that are an eyesore.

BTW, next month I'll be on campus and will see folks in the athletic dept. I'll present the best suggestion.
Green, definitely. The red track draws the eye away from the grey field.
Dear Love and Honor,
There are no corner bleachers at Rynearson. The stadium was designed so that the ends of each side of the stands angles in at the goal line.
