Bobby opened up the doors to Lengyel and Marshall to help them get back on track.. my heart changed from that moment on.

Bobby was offered the MU head football coaching job by then AD Eddie Barrett. Barrett had worked with Bobby (assistant football coach at that time) when they were both at WVU. Bobby passed on the job and Perry Moss was finally hired as the MU Football Coach. Moss was fired then Rick Tolley took over and the rest was history. Bobby said it could have been him on the plane instead of Rick. That might be the main reason Bobby helped Lengyel. I think Bobby would helped anyway since Bobby was a great person.
We'll miss you, Bobby.

Already do.

Yes, the last of his generation. Those teams he put together from the late 1980s to 2000 were amazing.

Over that 14 year span, FSU went 152 - 19 and won 10 BCS-level bowl games and 2 national titles.

Really, the only thing that separated Bowden from Nick Saban's run with Alabama is record in national title games. In games that effectively were such, he was 2-3.

And not only did he win at a prodigious rate, his teams were exciting as well. He helped make college football even more fun.

I can only think about what those teams would have done in a playoff system, even one with four teams like the current CFP. He probably would have been able to win a couple more NCs.
Legendary. On the field and off.

When I was 9 years old, my dad took me to my first OU game. They were playing this non-conference team called Florida State. I expected OU to win by 50, because OU beat most teams by 50 in those days. It was a tough game, and OU only won 24-9. It was FSU’s first season under Bobby Bowden. I had no idea I was watching two Hall of Fame coaches that day. FSU only got better from there. They would play anyone, any time, and usually win.

His teams were great. I later adopted them as my 2nd favorite team when OU was in the wilderness. Their bandwagon was fun. When I briefly lived in Florida, I much preferred them over the Gators.

A great coach and an even better man. RIP, Coach.

Oh, I think a couple may be conservative actually. It would have been easy to see them with at least 5-6 titles in that period. Really easy.

Man I loved Bobby Bowden. My 1st FSU game was at the Tangerine Bowl back in 1977. Larry Key and Jimmy Jordan were great in that game. Then those games against the Canes and Gators and Nebraska. Wow. Great memories. The world is a lesser place without Coach Bowden, a great football coach and a great man. May he RIP.
Howard Schnellenberger and Bobby Bowden in the same year. Rough for the Floridian nostalgia.

Steve Spurrier and Jimmy Johnson still looking good tho.

We'll never know of course, but I've never bought in to that line of thought. Bottom line is, Bowden was 2-3 in what amounted to national title games. I'm not sure that record improves with a 4-team playoff. It didn't improve with the BCS.

Bowden was arguably the greatest coach of all time, up until it was time to play for a national title. Then, he was merely good.

I think he may have gotten in 2x the title games which would get him up to 4 at least.... And several years they had the best team just didn't get in the title game.
