Listening to a new podcast series called Dictators and they are doing a profile on Kim Jong Il (the current guy's dad, son of the founder)
It talked about how he was fascinated by the arts, particularly cinema. Hitler was also fascinated by the arts and while technology was more primitive, the Nazi's were big into film.
Obviously two does not make a pattern, but I found it very interesting that two of the world's worst dictators had this in common and wonder if there are more.

Don’t know if dictators are attracted to “the arts,” as such. But artists/intellectuals are strongly attracted to dictators. That combination has caused a lot of pain in the world, esp. the last 100 years.

I think it’s more of an extension of their power than a true love of art. They want to possess, not appreciate. Not that different from drug kingpins with exotic animals or rappers with tons of cars and jewelry. Showing that you’re able to have it is more important than actually having it.
