Let's have some fun. I would want odu, va tech, west virginia, east carolina,Tennessee, nc state, Auburn, coastal carolina,Georgia, central Florida. I would name it. Family and friends alumni beaches and party conferece. The let's get serious and then chill conference. Let's hear yours. Be creative
Arkansas
Baylor
Houston
North Texas
Rice
SMU
TCU
Texas
Texas A&M
Texas Tech

The SWC if North Texas had been invited. (I believe this should've happened.) It may or may not have survived the Big XII merger, but it would've been interesting to see.
I could make three conferences. One that's realistically possible. One technically possible. One never possible.

Pacific Coast Conference v2:

Washington
Oregon
Oregon State
Cal
Stanford
UCLA
USC
San Diego State
UC San Diego
Hawaii

All members are less than 100 miles from the Pacific Ocean. Having ten all-sports members of which nine play football allows for balanced round-robin schedules in both basketball and football.
The original Big East and the two that turned it down. All but one (Providence) was playing football in 1979, so assume all would play at the Div. I level and get along with each other.

Boston College
Connecticut
Georgetown
Holy Cross
Providence
Rutgers
Seton Hall
St. John's
Syracuse
Villanova
Here’s the scenario: I’m the 80s the big East Coast independents join forces for a fb conference that eventually sponsors all sports

North:
BC
Syracuse
Pittsburgh
Penn St
WVU

South:
Florida St
Miami
GT
South Carolina
Clemson (leaves the ACC to join)

Later expands to 12

I'd go with that, but I might take UTSA instead of North Texas.

5 permanent rivals, rotate through 2 of the other 4. 5 OOC slots.

My 10-team league would be (and, considering how college athletics are trending, something of this sort is not too far-fetched) 1. based on a men's basketball conference only and 2. the schools for which men's hoops is a big deal and that are not part of the P6 (alphabetized):

BYU
Cincinnati
Dayton
Gonzaga
Houston
Memphis
Temple
UNLV

For Nos. 9 and 10 (two of the following): New Mexico/Saint Louis/San Diego State/SMU/Tulsa/UMass/UTEP/VCU/Wichita State

That is a 10-member basketball-only league of major note — an instant power league, with every program at least "major" (and in many cases, "high-major"). This "conference" would be an immediate challenger/rival to the Big East (i.e., a league that is not part of the traditional P5 in terms of statewide fan bases and massive financial resources but that is highly respected and competitive, with every program able to carry its own weight). This would be a fantastic men's basketball conference on every level.

And as a Memphis and Cincy fan, I would be hugely thrilled with being a part of this hoops-only league.

Something like this for me:

1. Marshall
2. Appalachian State
3. Liberty
4. WKU
5. Charlotte
6. Arkansas State
7. UAB
8. Southern Miss
9. La Tech
10. Louisiana
Mine's boring/predictable. It's the 6 east coast Big East members plus Cuse, Pitt, WV, and Maryland.
Alabama
Auburn
Clemson
Florida
Georgia

Louisiana State
Notre Dame
Ohio State
Oklahoma
Texas

07-coffee3
Marshall
App State
GA Southern
WKU
Middle Tenn
GA State
ODU
Coastal Carolina
FAU
FIU

I took Coastal on their potential and FIU on hoping one day they learn to emulate UCF. I also selfishly took them for their soccer programs. It most likely means Kentucky and South Carolina would still be soccer affiliates.

If you wanted 12 then Id go with Charlotte and Ohio.

It's not as compact as it could be but everyone is in the Eastern Time Zone except WKU and MTSU who is just outside the ETZ.
