North Carolina avoided taking the devastating hit to its athletic budget for the 2020-21 fiscal year that school administrators initially feared in the face of the COVID-19 pandemic. Nearly a year ago, athletic director Bubba Cunningham projected a loss in revenue of more than $30 million.

The shortfall is actually less than $6 million, Cunningham told the News & Observer on Monday. Cunningham and Rams Club executive director John Montgomery also penned a letter that was emailed to club members Monday with an outline of the news.

Excellent financial support and donations. Strong fiscal management.
Nicely done during a really tough year. Good that they led with a lot of cost cutting. Interesting that they exceeded their donations target…a sign of well heeled boosters. They also seem to have tapped into existing reserves from the Rams Club program…last year was definitely a rainy-day event. Finally, they’ve already sold out their upcoming season tickets.
