Looks like the new plan is a 12 team playoff with the 6 highest ranked conference champs and 6 at-large.

Do you think this will sway JMU's position on staying or leaving FCS? For those that enjoyed the playoffs you can now have it in the FBS. Last season Coastal Carolina and Cinci would have both made it from the G5.
12 teams is not enough. Only leaves room for one G5. All the rest of the at large selections will be 2nd or 3rd place teams in Power 5 conferences. 12 teams doesn't work anyway.

Go to 16 and be done with it.
Agree 24. Unless a G5 runs the table with some impressive win, the 12 will be all P5.

The top 6 conference champions get in. At least one non A5 team will be present.

24 is a dumb amount of teams for a playoff.
I wasn't suggesting 24.

I agree. It should be at least 16 teams. Share the wealth!

And, 85 wasn't suggesting 24 teams, he was answering 24. I feel like I am in a Get Smart episode.

Expanding the field to 12 teams is the gateway to a future 16 team field. Just as the NCAA expands all of its tournaments over time, FBS college football will expand to 16 teams.
Yup- needs to be 16. Frankly, I'm surprised there was support for such a jump. Figured it'd ratchet up to 8 and stay there for a while and eventually go higher. While it sounds good on paper, the metrics for selection of at large teams will be designed to insure that G5s have no chance. Let's say you have Cincinnati as the highest ranked G5 conference champ. And BYU is ranked 10th in all the public polls- I'd bet my last dollar they will not be in the Top 6 of the at large teams in the selection committee polls.
Yeah olddawg I thought the same, figured it'd go 8 for a while and hopefully eventually 16. Seems a little weird to make the jump to 12 without making the jump to 16 but hey 8 or 12 is better than 2 or 4.

I hope this is one more reason for JMU to look to get FBS in any way possible instead of staying CAA until the perfect invite comes along.
Who's on first?

Quote:Coffers: They'll be full -- or fuller at FBS schools. Industry sources have estimated an expanded bracket to be worth two or three times more than the current $600 million annually.

Double ($20 million) or tripling ($30 million) the CFP payout is interesting. Being locked out of FBS would be hard on big public FCS school's bottom line. Also, as NIL bylaws are passed kids are going to want more exposure for their own cash stream. That could hurt recruiting too. Mayeb not JMU but definitely y'alls competition. Lowering the play level would make FCS lose even more luster for JMU/NDSU/YSU/SDSU/SHSU/etc.

I don't know. Oh, he's on third.
Anyone who thinks the P5s will do anything that hurts their monopoly is fooling themselves. The G5’s will be provided a remote chance of making the playoffs and when I say remote, I mean just enough of a chance to eliminate the any prospects of legal action under anti-trust laws.

The top P5s will schedule in such a way that any prospective playoff G5 will not be able to garner enough strength of schedule or will have to win road games at top P5 schools to make the field. A miracle will happen every 5 years that will allow the monopoly to exist as a G5 will defy the odds and make it only to be paired against the top seed and bounced from the party.
Does anyone think it was an accident that JMU softball was placed in a Super Regional against the 8 seed? The unseeded Dukes faced the #1 team three times in th WCWS. In 2019, they were sent to #1 UCLA. This stuff doesn’t happen by chance.

G5’s need to look to build their own brand. They need to look at what would attract fans to their stadiums. They need to form conferences that foster strong rivalries with fan bases that show up on Saturdays. Ditch the past. Look to the future. Schools that once had promise are has been. Who is thriving and growing now and will be into the next two decades? Don’t settle for the P5 handout. Blaze your own trail. That is what innovation in the entertainment business is all about.
If they had this format last year the league that would have been frozen out is the PAC-12. AAC and Sunbelt (Thanks KickItToScotty!) would have been #5 and #6 conference champs.

If those teams can win the first round game and make some noise in the second round it would definitely open it up to more G5 teams in the future as America loves an underdog story. The fans of Bama, OU, OSU and UGA will hate having to share the limelight because they are pompous f**ks, but the rest of America will be all over it (think Utah and Boise St over OU and Bama) which from a marketing and viewership scenario (i.e. $$$$) will force the committee to be more inclusive.

You should actually read the proposal. The G5 is guaranteed one spot every single year with the shot of getting more than one spot.

That’s ok though. You guys can host Colgate in the kiddie pool.
Well, I mean, sometimes we’ll travel to Colgate too! (Crap that’s not a good thing)

Think you mean Sun Belt. Monmouth in the FBS CFP would be pretty funny though.

Hahaha Thanks yeah, big time mind fart.
Even though this will be voted on soon, I don't think there would be any changes made to the current 4 team playoffs until the CFP's contract with ESPN runs out in 2026. Any and all Independent teams will have until then to find a conference if they want to be eligible for a first week bye (a bye goes to the teams ranked 1-4, which are made up solely of the top 4 ranked conference champs). A number of conference media rights deals will expire before 2026 (in 23 or 24) so that means if we announce an Independent move up, it could only be for a couple years. This assumes a realignment shake up in the other G5 conferences that will lead to an opening for us. The other sports stay in the CAA until such a home is found.

What on earth are you talking about? What is the correlation between my post and Colgate? I was talking about G5’s needing to brand themselves and you make some stupid post about Colgate and the kiddie pool?
