On a “Personal JMU experiences for you” scale.

Watching America get a taste of the school we all love so much has been incredible.
Not sure if no. 1 for me, but up there. However, it is truly the first time In have seen ESPN basically slobber and in awe of JMU or CC.

LOL! We've been treated well before with Gameday, etc. JMU is getting tons of mentions this weekend, and I'm sure it will increase if we advance.

CC getting an on air appearance/mini interview at 11:45 today on SC seems like a first.

How I would rank this compared to other JMU sports moments depends a little on how the rest of the tournament goes.
It's pretty high up there, a lot of them are so tough to compare. Whether or not you're there in person makes them really tough to compare too, like I'm always tempted to put the Scotty McGee return at Richmond as my #1 sports moment because of the atmosphere in Bridgeforth East when it happened. But it's hard to actually rank a regular season FCS win over some of the more meaningful stuff.

I think I'll go:
1. Chattanooga 2004
2. NCAA tournament in Dayton 2013
3. Frisco 2016
4. WCWS 2021
5. Football at VT 2010(would probably be #1 easily if in person)
6. Football at Richmond 2008
7. Football vs App State 2008
8. College GameDay 2015
9. College GameDay 2017
10. Football at NDSU 2016

Even if they go all the way I don't know if I can move it up any for me considering I'm not gonna be there in OKC. The amount we've seen so many people with zero connection to JMU falling in love with this team has been amazing though.

Well, when you're slobbering all over Flo, makes it difficult for ESPN to climb in our bed. Flo, i.e. the CAA, is not helping the JMU brand at all.

What also makes this different are the pro athletes, coaches, pro sports teams, and so on tweeting and being in awe.The national exposure from those who are not even JMU fans like Coach Rivera, HOF Terrel Owens, and many more is not something that came with college gameday or other wins.
On a difficulty level you could make a case that this run by JMU Softball is approaching if not the best in JMU sports history. Let’s finish the deal and not to take anything away from our other national championship teams but just from a numbers perspective. There are roughly 300 D1 softball programs. Can’t say that about FCS Football, Women’s Lax or Field Hockey where the field is less. The gauntlet that JMU Softball has had to run this far 2 Sec and 2 Big 12 that’s as hard a path as any JMU team has ever had to travel.

yeah, this really is up there with ASU/Michigan, or a Davidson/GMU run through the NCAA tournament.

I've always believed the dedication required for a softball athlete is second to none in collage sports. The schedule is out right brutal and that is even before the regionals begin.

From a JMU Athletics perspective and what this does for the exposure as a university outside of athletics, this might be the biggest. Maybe equal to a sweet 16 in MBB. Thanks to the ESPN exposure, the JMU softball team has become America's Sweethearts.

I was out and about running errands this weekend, wearing JMU shirts. I had 6 strangers mentioning the softball team. That's doesn't happen for FCS football playoffs/championships. If you asked 10 random people to name 10 football programs that played in the FCS, how many could do it? You can't buy the marketing/exposure we are getting.
I'm going on record now: If JMU beats OU again today, it will be #1 for me without question.
The first win puts it as top 5, but beating the #1 team in the country a second time at the WCWS to take us to the championship series would have to be the biggest win in JMU athletics history.
Great thread and I was thinking the same thing over the weekend.

"For me"
#1 is the 2004 NC Run
#2 is this year's softball run. If we won the Softball NC, might have to have co #1s.

These are the two for me......
For national recognition, I think it ranks up there just behind GameDay. The softball success seems to have garnered a lot more recognition than Football runs. Definitely, a lot more twitter response with softball. GameDay at least got most college football fans tuning in - not just FCS fans.

I don't want to rank any of them as to which is better overall for me personally. All of them have been great as a fan and alum of JMU. When people outside of JMU are exposed to JMU, it's a good thing.
I did my rankings by my personal experience, but as far as exposure for JMU I think this is probably #1 even above GameDay. I guess GameDay might've gotten more eyes on JMU, but this has more people falling in love with JMU and cheering for JMU while showing JMU sports can compete at the highest level.

Definitely this. The media love for JMU has been going on since Thursday

Agree but I'm guessing the viewership for the 4 hours of college game day is a whole lot less than the viewership for the 16+ hours of games and sports news.

Also, ESPN will be talking about this run by JMU for years to come, guessing there will be a mention or two at every subsequent WCWS. Doubt there have been very many mentions of JMU hosting gameday and few outside of JMU nation even remember we hosted two gamedays, much less one.

ESPN actually refers to the JMU Gamedays a LOT, and even did so several times during the WCWS coverage. I've seen Herbstreit talk about JMU and Fargo Gamedays in interviews that had nothing to do with the schools and he'll bring them up as his 'best' experiences. So we're still getting pub for that.

Hate to break it to you, but softball is a very niche sport. Its kind of like hockey or college wrestling where the people who are into it are WAAAY into it but everyone else kind of just shrugs and moves on. Think about it, when JMU wasn't in the WCWS how much have you or anyone else here paid much attention to it other than maybe seeing it on if you're out at a bar this time of year? I doubt much, and for most of America if they're not into softball or not in the purple snow globe right this isn't going to register much other than seeing the #1 highlight on SportsCenter or a 2 minute clip on the game recap.

I saw a graphic on one of the JMU Nation pages where this was the most watched WCWS ever and the viewership for JMU/OU being the most watched game at something lik e689k. That puts it well behind the four Natty's in football for viewership and the CGDs.

Frankly the most exposure we ever got from a single game was probably the play in game for the NCAA basketball tournament a few years back, but the narrative of that was 'these are the minnows' so it doesn't do much for you other than seeing the name up on the marquee.
This run has gotten JMU more national exposure than any previous event, bar none. This has been going on for a couple of weeks so it is a multiple event deal. Beating Mizzou and then Oklahoma and OK State. Game Day was a 4 hour event. It brought great recognition to us, but this run is more valuable. Big article in today's DNR as to how the girl's and boy's basketball coaches are gaining recruiting advantages because of it. Combine it with our facilities and we are in a really good place. Jeff Bourne has built a phenomenal sports program for us. Loren is going to be able to recruit big time from this exposure. She will be due a big raise. Question? Can CC comeback next year if she wants? Free year counts for softball, too, doesn't it.

Other top ten events:
*3 year run to the men's NCAA basketball tourney in early 80's
*women's Natty in field hockey
*beating UVA with Gary Clark
*Lacrosse Championship
*2004 Football Natty winning every game on the road
*Scotty McGee's punt return against the Ticks Sports Center Top Ten
*Come from behind win against App State
*Beating Top Ten VA Tech in football
*Beating NDSU in Fargo
