Sam Herder is indicating that he's been informed that the ASUN will get a two-year waiver for '22 and '23 for the automatic bid. It is safe to presume that if the ASUN is getting said waiver, the same can be said for the WAC.

The WAC will have five fully eligible Division I teams in 2022 - the Texas institutions leaving the Southland and Southern Utah.

We all assumed this would be the case but it's nice to see further affirmation albeit not confirmed via the ASUN or WAC.

I’m certainly happy to hear the waiver has probably been approved even though ACU is not likely to be in contention for the autobid. I feel confident that ACU will be very competitive in a number of sports in the new WAC- both men’s and women’s basketball, soccer, baseball, cross country. Sadly, I’m not nearly as confident about football.
Autobid or not, I would bet a large amount of money that the WAC champion would have received an invite to the FCS playoffs.

More than likely, yes.

However the one thing to consider is that with just six conference games, if a WAC team crapped the bed OOC and then went 4-2 in the league to be tops based on tiebreaker... how attractive would a 5-6 or 6-5 team really be especially with one of those being a non D1 win?

Believe only one team with six Div I wins was ever allowed in playoffs as an at large and that happened 2, 3 years ago

Would rather have AQ and not have anything to worry about

True, but in reality does a 6-5 team deserve to be in the playoffs? IMO, no.
The answer to receiving a playoff bid is winning and scheduling. For any conference with less than seven scheduling becomes a bigger and bigger issue as the need to find FCS opponents to play becomes more difficult. Do most schools schedule lower division teams for a win that doesn't really help their resume or because they can't find a FCS school willing to do home and home that will fit into both schools schedule. Looking at both FBS and FCS most schools play all of their non-conference games up front and the last part of the schedules are all conference so finding enough late October and November games to fill out the schedules becomes an issue.

I’ll leave that conversation to you and the Missouri Valley Conference

I couldn't care less, the BSC gets plenty of at-large berths.
Significant FCS playoff news out of the Big Sky Conference media day... that pertains to WAC / ASUN automatic bid situation.

I like this idea of no first round byes. Hope they get this done

It’s way too much access to the playoffs

Going to 32 teams means that 1 of 3 teams from the leagues that truly compete for the postseason get entry

It’s one thing to add another school or two but eight? You’ll get the fourth place teams from so so leagues whether they are 7-4 or 6-5 and beat absolutely no one that mattered

I read recently that March Madness only includes 18% of D1 teams. 33% does seem excessive.

There are approximately 350 D1 basketball teams and the NCAA tourney takes 68, but there are three other post season tourneys that I know of that take at least another 70. There are about 250 D1 programs playing football between FBS and FCS. FBS currently only takes four for the "championship playoff" but at least another forty play in a bowl game of some sort, so the FBS division post season also includes around 1/3 of those participating in the regular season.

I suppose I should agree with you since it increases the odds of your school and mine making the playoffs.

Looking forward to 6-5 Houston Baptist, 8-3 Stetson and 7-4 Tennessee Martin making the field! 03-puke

It just dilutes things and as is, not all the opening round games are ideal. In 2019 - here's your opening round games.

24-6, 24-6, 42-6, 42-14, 44-27, 17-3, 28-21, 45-44

Of the eight games, only two were decided by less than 13 points! Southeastern beat 'Nova 45-44 and Kennesaw beat Weber St 28-21.

In 2018, three of the eight games were decided by less than 13 points and I dare say the gap between the haves and have nots is growing.

On the other hand, it might help prevent a team from like McNeese's 2017 squad from being left at home. McNeese had a 9-2 overall; 7-2 conference regular season record with away game losses to two playoff teams. The Cowboys stayed home despite being ranked #19 in the STATS poll and #15 in the Coaches poll in the final regular season polls. They were ranked #22 and #18 respectively in the final polls.

A 6-5 Houston Baptist team in the playoffs would be a travesty. A 6-5 ACU team on the other hand….COGS

Gah!

They were the fourth place team in the Southland 2017 and that's a hard one when you have not beaten the three teams 'above' or equal to you in the league standings and have no quality OOC wins.

They were winless against Nicholls (7-2) and Central Arkansas (9-0) and had avoided Sam Houston State (8-1) due to scheduling. Their OOC wins were Florida Tech and Alcorn State.

The Southland was a three-bid league that year and it would've been inexcusable for a fourth bid when the league as a whole was 'eh'. The Southland teams were picked in order of finish with Nicholls getting the nod over McNeese by virtue of their win.

The team behind McNeese was Southeastern La. which had no OOC wins (lost to Bethune Cookman & UL-Lafayette) so they didn't have any quality points either.

Postseason access is not the same as championship access. The NIT and 41 of the 43 bowl games are postseason opportunities but they don't lead to a NCAA or CFP Championship. The men's NCAA tourney is 68 teams from the ~350 D1 teams so only 1 in 5.1 teams get the chance to do what Baylor did in April.
Column by one of the NDSU media about playoff field expansion - still not on board with it and the poll on the page seems to indicate others agree
