Moon leaving has been pretty common knowledge for a little while.
Hallmark - he now has the seasoning and head coaching track record that he didn't have at the time Graham left (and this can be the face-saving argument that Karlgaard can now make).

Credentials: Highly successful history at Rice as both a player and coach, CWS experience, minor league baseball experience, head coaching experience, played and learned under the best (Graham). This choice doesn't get any easier.

I love Berkman but question whether he wants to dedicate his life to the grind... which will be necessary to resuscitate our program. He would attract attention, no doubt... but he'd need a strong #2 willing to be the "laboring oar" in terms of doing the dirty work.

Unfortunately I heard from a very solid source that Lance is signed sealed and delivered for HBU.

My understanding is that it is a done deal, though I do wonder if our job being open makes him reconsider.

Good point....but if he's offered the HBU job and turns it down he'd be really gambling on getting the Rice job. I can see him doing a good job at HBU. Maybe he can convince them to get lights. lol...

That's funny and sad at the same time. The fact HBU has no lights is ridiculous. MANY area HS fields make HBU look like, at best, little league. If HS School Districts can do this then so should a D1 baseball program. Heck, I think the FB stadium just got lights a few years back. It would be nice if HBU put some real money behind their sports. Maybe they don't have it but if they could pull off something similar to DBU then they could really build something over there.

Not surprising. It's actually a very good fit for Lance, and the appropriate stepping stone.
Hopefully with a few more years of experience, Berkman can learn something about baseball.

In the meantime, HBU will pass us up in baseball.

I dont think Saarloos is coming to Rice and Schloss is not the frontrunner at A&M.
Now that Tadlock has turned down the Aggies, who’s the frontrunner?

Lots of rumors. Vitello at Tenn, Godwin at ECU, and Schloss. My guess is one of those 3. Bakich at Michigan has been mentioned also.

I just don't see what's in such a move for Schloss. Yes, the Aggies can probably pay more, but it's not like he's getting underpaid at TCU, and TCU facilities are at least equal to A&M's, if not better on the baseball side.

TCU has a nice facility....but A&M's facilities are ridiculous. Beyond the obvious (Blue Bell Park), the "underneath the hood" stuff is insane. I've toured both of them. A&M's the best I've ever seen.

And there's no probably about it....A&M can pay more than pretty much everybody.

You are right. I have mixed feelings about going to the SEC, but financially, it has been a easy decision. More that I am sentimental towards the Big 12 and espeically the SWC, but if we wanted to move our program forward, it was a no brainer.
One coach that should ABSOLUTELY be on Karlgaard's radar is Matt Hobbes at Arkansas! Regarded my many as the best assistant in the country, a cerebral baseball mind (good fit for Rice), and leader in player development using data, he would be a great fit. The only issue is that he might be too big a fish for Rice at this point, but Karlgaard would be idiotic not to try. Heres a good article on him:https://www.wholehogsports.com/news/2018/nov/29/who-matt-hobbs-former-coach-teammate-player-descri/

I think that Hallmark is the safe choice as he checks all the boxes and would certainly improve the state of Rice baseball. The other benefit of a coach like Hallmark is that with his ties to Rice, he might not trade up at the first signs of success. First we need to achieve success, but we also want someone that will stay and maintain it. It would be hard to re-build the Rice of the 2000's without a dedicated long-term coach, which an outside hire most certainly would not be when the SEC comes calling.

That being said.... we need to be making regionals, supers, and Omaha again before that is a worry.

The best thing that can be said about Wayne Graham is that he stayed. The worst thing that can be said about Wayne Graham is that he wouldn’t leave
