Rick Vaanderhook retiring at CSF. That should officially end any talk of Saarloos coming here.

@KendallRogers
Kirk is not going to Fullerton.
We've been a little bit hung up on our own record (as should be the case), but Fullerton has been having its own problems as of late. They barely had a winning record in 2019 and missed the NCAA regionals for the first time since 1992. This year, they were 20-35, their first-ever losing record since joining D1 in 1975.
I dont understand why the current fixation on Schlossnagle and Saarloos. I would assume that both have been 'way up high' on just about everybody's 'would love to have' list for the last ten years (7 or 8 for Saarloos).

Neither ever moves. No matter what the position in question. The only position that *might* entice Saarloos I think would be Fullerton.

But no matter the spot, Saarloos and Schlossnagle are always noted as 'high prospects' for that position.

My guess is that Schloss will end his career solely at TCU. And Saarloos will probably only bolt for CSF -- I would guess both have had literally multiple scores of chances to leave TCU at this juncture, and neither has.

I really dont understand why Saarloos was in the mention for the Rice position.

Only because he was a candidate that I thought interviewed after WG’s tenure. I’m pretty sure he was at least contacted.

Yes, he interviewed and then took himself out of the running pretty early on. BTW, per my post above, according to Kendall (who has a personal relationship with both Schloss and Saarloos), Kirk is not going to CSF.
Any news?

Seems like there are many attractive options. Just hope we get it right.
How qualified is Cruz? I thought all this time we were referring to Cruz Sr., not Jr. Someone give us a rundown on his resume.
I'd love for Jose Cruz Jr to be heavily involved in Rice Baseball. Just not as the head coach.

Hallmark is the best choice - has the coaching experience and track record, the Rice ties, and the endorsement of Coach Graham.

He has a Wikipedia page, Cruz Wikipedia
I spent some time with Jr. on the football trip to Sydney...just my opinion but he would be an outstanding coach at Rice....He has tremendous knowledge of the game and is a really great person that gets Rice and understands the Rice experience...Jose Jr. would be a home run selection.
So, based on recent comments it looks like most think we may be down to JC, Jr and Hallmark. As I mentioned before I’m really good with either of these quality guys. Are we sure Childress is out? I saw a comment here that he was so I’ll just take that as good but curious as to why. Not sure I’m a Childress fan based on comments of a former player of his. I put a lot of stock in guys who played the game.

Should be an interesting few days coming up.

First off, we still don't know if JC Jr has applied. Second, Sean Allen is still very much in it from everything we've heard. As for Childress, the only thing we've heard is that Kendall doesn't expect him to be the next coach.

My only concern is that I'm not sure that under current conditions it is possible to have a home run result.

Somebody asked me several years ago how many football games I thought Nick Saban could win at Rice. My answer was, "None, because he would never take the job under current conditions." That's kind of how I feel about this situation.

Your opinion. I strongly disagree. The baseball program has ample resources. So long as JK keeps his hands out of it, which I would imagine every remaining candidate would insist upon, the program should be fine.

Childress would be a good hire for Rice. Lots of former players that really like him.

Agree there likely are I’m just referring to what was posted here. There are ALWAYS two viewpoints to every issue. But none on this board spoke with experience playing for both programs save one. But, I have seen many positive comments from a&m players so that has merit as well.

Thanks Walt for the Kendall reference regarding Childress. I knew I saw something about it.
I don't think I'm comfortable with Cruz.
