It is now officially the wild wild west in recruiting...Burn baby burnO
Scholarships are really only one year contracts.

If this portal showed anything this season...most guys don’t get picked up. Transferring is a terrible idea for most.

Exactly, it’s become saturated. So unless you’re elite, it doesn’t make much sense to transfer. You’ll get lost in the masses.

It's basically just rearranging furniture.

One would hope, at some point, someone will realized there needs to be some kind of counseling service or something like the NBA has for the draft where players can get a better evaluation on their situation and their prospects elsewhere, but I don't see that happening. It's awfully messy and will be expensive.

It's also quite un-trendy to tell a young person they shouldn't be making choices for themselves. I get personal freedom but this is an area where most involved in a decision like this either don't have the players best interest at heart or they have their head so far up in the clouds they aren't able to see anything clearly.

However, this could also benefit teams like NIU (mid-majors) as it opens the door for players who went big (for a variety of reasons) and should have had their sights set a little lower. It allows them to correct that mistake. You see this a lot in basketball, where a kid will go to a power conference team and then transfer to a JUCO the next season. I suppose this will actually hurt JUCOs because they aren't as necessary anymore, although they are still a good place for a kid to go and get a year where they start and put up some numbers and can get noticed.

I mean, there is a big difference between going somewhere like Sam Houston State and Tennessee Tech and by getting noticed at JUCO might be the difference between the two.

Anyway, I kind of found myself off topic (it happens a lot...). But yeah, I'm not sure if it'll help or hurt mid-majors yet (probably a little of both but also probably a little more of one of those than the other).

I guess you just need to find a coach who can work the new system to their advantage.

This works for those dripping down in level. A P5 player not seeing field, might want to drop to a G5 school. Being 4th string at The OSU might make you a rotational player at Ohio U
Guessing this gets dialed back at some point.

Wondering if NIU will gain or lose more by the new system? I can see both happening.

I have a feeling it'll hurt football more than basketball.
If the reality is that scholarships are just for a year at a time, then the coaches can exercise not to renew the scholarship as much as student can elect to transfer. I can't imagine their is a lot of joy being at the bottom of the depth chart knowing that the coach can take back your scholarship because you have become fodder.
I think I saw that a player can only transfer and play right away once. After that you would need to sit out a year.

This is correct.
NIU is already Iowa's DL farm system so I can see how it will hurt.

The flip side is we can get the benefit of guys like Ratkovich sooner perhaps.

Imagine the extra work needed to constantly manage a roster. You groom a guy to be great and he is then leaves. I guess that is what Hammock is doing now with all the competition. Keeping the pipelines stacked with talent.

Guys like Hammock who establish relationships should benefit. Even if he misses on a guy year 1 he might come around after.

So far Hammock has stressed that he doesn't want to build a roster via transfers as a main source more supplemental where there is a specific need and then fill that gap. See QB and H back this year.

Plus it will keep guys like niu1981 invaluable on this board keeping track of all the comings and goings.

I'd argue that never happens though but it's still not fun being behind a guy who is either the same class as you or behind you and you know you're going to ride pine your whole career at the school. So, I do get it to an extent.

They can tell you that you are not in their future. Yes your scholarship will be renewed but being on scout team for 5 years would suck.

I didn't say it couldn't happen. I said it never happens.

How many times does it happen? I've never heard of it happening. I'm sure it has but it can't be common practice at all.
Geno German will always be the NIU scoring champion as no one will stick around 4 years at MAC schools. German would’ve left and the best MAC players will eventually leave. There would’ve been a great chance Jordan Lynch would’ve left his senior year if this was in place.
The big boys will lose some players but will be replacing them with great mid majors or other big time talent. They never will be getting crappy transfers. The mid majors will get a few big time players but mostly other mid majors talent
I support the change -- giving student-athletes more mobility -- but it's going to hurt high school graduates most. They will be in direct competition with college transfers, much more so than under current/now past rules.

Unless one is a outstanding hs player, most slots will be filled by transfers who want more playing time. Coaches will be less willing to gamble that a freshman will stay. Why take the chance when there are hundreds and hundreds of players with some college experience?
I think it's not great for smaller schools, but I can see some benefit. I think it's also on the onus of coaches to build a culture of family or whatever you want to call it that keeps units/teams/players together to prove that a team is stronger than the individual. While this isn't easy, if you can prove that the team is better than the sum of the parts, you can build a team that mostly sticks together for 4-years. Get players to honor their commitment. It's not as if NIU and the MAC haven't produced some amazing NFL talent.

The rule makes sense but it and the portal are hurting JUCO kids too, much tougher for them to find a spot now.
