Thanks in great part to the 10K run by Grace Forbes, Rice Women's Track and Field moved up 21 spots to #29 in the NCAA Division I
Women's Outdoor Track & Field
USTFCCCA National TFRI (Track & Field Rating Index).
Rice women drop 3 spots to #32; men drop 10 places to #66.

Is the drop likely due to recent performances (disappointing?) or the relative ascension of other teams?

(Or the sudden realization that we're not actually a member of a P5 conference ... as they'd assumed based on our athletes' performances ... so of course "now we can't rank them as high as we had"?)
I am pretty sure that particular ranking is strictly a dope sheet based on rankings within the various NCAA events. So even though a couple of Owls on the national charts improved their PR's this weekend (Michelle Fokam and Erna Gunnarsdottir), we may have lost points as a team if enough athletes passed them up (and the hammer thrower) on the various outdoor performance lists.

I know Fokam was 4th in the TJ heading into the week and improved her best, but she's now 6th on the list. I don't know what Tara Simpson-Sullivan was entering the week in the hammer, but she's now 14th.

We should move up on the chart once Forbes runs a 5000 (she's still 1st nationally in the 10,000). It really doesn't matter much though if they can't perform well at the NCAA West Prelims. That meet is going to determine how many people we get to nationals. And I would think the team goal would be a conference title and top-25 national finish.
The team ranking should improve next week. Tara Simpson-Sullivan improved her PR (and school record) in the hammer to 67.67 meters (222'). She moved from 14th overall in the NCAA rankings to 4th.
Rice women are back up to #29. The men drop 4 spots to #70.

Both teams are competing this Saturday at Rice in the annual J. Fred Duckett Meet.
Rice up to #14.

WOMEN'S RANKINGS

Men are up 3 spots to #67.
Has any Rice team (other than baseball) been ranked this high in the past 50 years (since men's tennis in the early 1970s)?

Women's tennis in the Natalie Beazant era, perhaps?

No, if my memory serves me, we were usually ranked in the 20s during Natalie tenure here.
Women's indoor track finished 6th at the NCAA Championships in 1989, and 9th outdoors in 2001. The men's indoor track team finished between 13th and 15th three different times in a span of four years between 1990 and 1993.

I was going to guess Men's Track and Field during the Kareem Streete-Thompson, Bryan Bronson era.
Once again, I am very impressed with a Rice women’s athletics program.
Dropped 5 spots to #19 in the latest rankings.

The washout at Texas A&M did not do us any favors.

Rice men drop to #81 (again, they were hurt by not being able to compete last weekend).
Not sure where to put this but freshman Morgan Fey's younger sister (freshman in HS) won the 5A State championship in discus today.

Her mom was a five-time All-American for SMU in the shot put.

I went to the same high school (Southwest-hence the dragon part of the name) where the kids went/go.
JoAnn was recently named Midlothian Independent School District Superintendent after 25 years with Southwest ISD. Assuming the daughter will go with. Lol

Here's a link to a nice 2020 video interview of the younger Fey (Madeleine) after she's won the 14-year-old AAU discus title: https://www.milesplit.com/videos/447527/...scus-title

She's wearing a Rice Owls Track & Field T-Shirt. :-)

Hope she'll be an Owl in a few years.
