Yes, counter-programming hoops with football.

FWIW, Southern and Jackson State are serious rivals. They first played more than 90 years ago, and have played every year since 1958. Southern is Jackson State's biggest rival, Jackson State is only behind Grambling on Southern's list. The schools are about 150 miles apart . It's a competitive one, too. IIRC, Southern leads the series something like 36 - 31. Usually the games are close and hard fought.

Only sad thing is that IIRC there will not be the raucous crowd the game usually draws, nor Southern's "Human Juke Box" vs JSU's "Sonic Boom of the South" marching bands battle.

Probably around 20 or so. Hard to remember. All Southern games.

It’s out of season. What else would they be showing at this day and time? A MLS game?

They don’t show FCS during the real season when FBS is playing.

Actually they do have a deal with the SWAC. Even in normal years they usually get a few conference games on real TV a year. Might just be a Thursday thing though, but either way that's better than every other FCS conference.

Stadium seats 44,000. Current Mississippi rules allow half capacity, 22000.
Jags blow Deion away, 34-14
Southern looks solid despite having 9 starters out for the Spring. Dawson Odoms is a helluva coach.

FAMU ranks up there as far as rivalries with Southern. SU/JSU is more hate kind of like SU/FAMU. The SU/Grambling rivalry is more of a family rivalry.

FAMU is certainly a major rivalry of Southern, and unique in that until now it has been a cross-conference rivalry. I would agree, they are right there with Jackson State, though sadly for the past 20 years the rivalry has been intermittent.

I liked the mystique of that, btw, I'm not happy that FAMU is now in the SWAC. Great institution and great add in a technical sense, but I would rather FAMU be a flagship MEAC program that SU and the SWAC competes against.

As far as characterizing the rivalries, I think you peg the SU/Grambling and SU/JSU ones correctly. I would say though that FAMU is kind of in-between those extremes. Some "hate", but also respect for a cross-conference rival with a rich legacy of their own.
