Don't think they wanted to keep him. Marquette should be a good fit for him. He can go back to recruiting grinders instead of having to grab 5-stars to appease the fanbase.

They certainly believe that for every sport they are just one coach away from their legitimate right to being national champions in every single sport. The day and age of 10/15/20/35 year coaches at one school is simply gone in today's day and age of massive money and immediate gratification. On the other hand, we have Rice......

Would have been clearer if that had been noted in the OP, which gave the impression that Smart had been booted out of Austin.

I agree. I'd be very surprised if Marquette has to pay any of the buyout.

This works for everyone involved.

UT gets to continue thinking that one magic coach is going to give the school elite status in college basketball. The problem is, UT has never been close to being basketball royalty, and the good teams they have had have hinged on having a few big names that they have been able to recruit through brand power. (I will admit this though: if the Longhorns get Beard, they are likely to become really good and stay good.)

As for Marquette, the Golden Eagles finally get to have another coach that might suit their legacy. Ever since the inimitable Al McGuire and his bench coaches left Marquette, that school has struggled to recapture the magic that it had in the 1970s. Like him or hate him, only Buzz Williams has really been able to invoke a bit of McGuire's moxie on Marquette's sidelines, and that is because he has personality. Smart is an outspoken and experienced coach from Wisconsin with a bit of fire; I therefore think this hire will work well for Marquette.

As for the people who think this is a step down for Smart... Marquette - one national title; UT - none. It will be interesting to see how this turns out.

Tom Crean was 190-96 (.664) in his 9 seasons at Marquette, including 49-20 in his last 2 before Buzz Williams stepped into a good situation. Williams went 139-69 (.668) in his 6 seasons, with his last being just 17-15.

Crean lucked into having DWade; the teams of Buzz Williams were more consistent. Crean's success was not all that.

Crean in nine seasons at Marquette: three NITs, three NCAA rounds of 64, one round of 32, one final four.
Williams in six seasons at Marquette: one NCAA round of 64, one round of 32, two sweet sixteens, one elite eight.

I will concede that Williams inherited a better situation. But his teams also turned out some very good pros, and that is not entirely down to what he inherited. Williams did not go out on a high at Marquette, but his teams were very, very good every single season before that. And he had some verve on the sidelines. He suited Marquette better, even if he wasn't welcome there anymore in the end.

The point is, Marquette has to hire with an identity in mind; I think they did that with Smart. Guys like Crean and Wojciechowski aren't suited to Marquette, not with McGuire's omnipresent shadow around.

Maybe Smart won't measure up either. We'll see. But I think he has a decent chance to reestablish both himself and Marquette's identity, provided he has some sense of the history there.

Houston Chronicle reports no buyout involved. Will be interesting now with Texas and Oklahoma jobs open. I doubt UNT holds onto McCasland when all the dust settles.

Just wait til next... decade...

Texas hires Chris Beard. Really good coach, will probably be more successful than Shaka Smart. But he does share some qualities with Smart - another coach who's all about toughness and grinders. He's probably a better coach than Smart, but I'm still not sure how his style of play will translate to Texas. Harder to get 5-stars to play like Little Rock and Texas Tech than it is the kids that Beard got at Texas Tech.

Will this be a repeat of the less than successful outcome with David McWilliams?

How does Tech not have a huge buy-out for moving in conference?

It dropped to $4M on Thursday. His contract at Tech was $6M per year and he turned down a lifetime contract.

And MBB is the top sport at Marquette. Mo competing with football.
