Just announced that Virginia Commonwealth has COVID issues and will not play Oregon Saturday night in the NCAA tournament. No contest.

Feel bad for the players. Stupid rules disqualify a team that’s earned a spot.

Unrelated but watching Grand Canyon and I’m reminded why Rice won’t ever make waves in basketball. A for profit university with no academic requirements gets into the tourney within a few years of starting a program. Just trashy

To be fair to them, one of the reasons they've made waves so quickly is that they have awesome fan support and one of the best mid-major gameday environments in the country. If you're not concerned about academics, it's a place that at the very least you know will be bouncing during every game. Plus, even Rice would probably have a better chance at the tournament coming out of the WAC.

Big question for Grand Canyon is whether they'll be able to continue being this good with the five new teams. SFA has been historically great for a mid-major, Abilene and Southern Utah have seen some early sparks the last few years, and Sam Houston was very good only a few years ago. Really GCU has only been competing against New Mexico State over the last few years (at least in terms of pure talent).
Ohio U. 62, Virginia 58

You can sit down now, Murphy.

Trey actually had a very good game. They stopped looking for him in the second half....until his 3 pulled UVA within 2 with 7 seconds left.
UT down by 3 to Abilene Christian with 2 minutes left. Shaka’s mediocrity shining through

They have requirements and meet all NCAA eligibility rules. GCU has had a basketball program since 1949-50, and has been D1 since 2013.

I posted in the other thread, but every coach in America should be showing his/her team film of ACU's defense. No exaggeration, maybe the best 40 minutes of closeouts/scrambling I've seen watching CBB. Five guys running their tails off for 30 seconds on every possession.
ACU heading to the line down by 1.
Down goes Texas! Down goes Texas!

2 FTs for ACU with 1.2 sec to play prove to be the winner for Abilene Christian over UT - 53-52.
58% FT shooter hits 2 FTs with 1.5 seconds left, down 1. The cajones. I would've airballed them both.
One of the happiest days of my basketball lifetime to see the Whorns go down to Abilene Christian

Defense wins at the tourney 90%of the time. The first time we went to the NAIA National Tournament we played the highest scoring team in the nation, held them to 62 points and went to the final 8. The first of 3 trips. It CAN happen at Rice with the RIGHT coach
Undergraduate enrollment (2020-21):

University of Texas 57,241
Rice University 4,052
Abilene Christian 3,496

03-lmfao size doesn't always matter
Abilene Christian shot 29.9% for the game. Stunning.
As a UT law grad (and husband of an ACU/UT grad), I can't stop laughing. What a great game.
I haven't done any research, but there can't be too many Division I teams with better records than Abilene Christian over the past 3 seasons (71-22).

Did they make a single shot outside 5 - 7 feet all game. Their offense consisted of running down the shot clock then having someone do a kamakazi drive to the basket.

On the other hand, their defense was a thing of beauty-- against a much taller, more athletic and much more talented team. Hustle usually wins. The fact that ACU got 20 offensive boards against UT is just amazing.

03-lmfao And all those UNC players got real degrees.

Grand Canyon takes all the California kids who are too dumb to go to ASU and that’s saying something. It’s an online school who decided they want to invest big $$$ in sports so they can increase their applicant pool. They shouldn’t even be allowed to play in the NCAA.
