First it was the drunk asss Boss ruing their rep, now it's Cherokee Nation:

Cherokee Nation leader says Jeep model ‘does not honor us’
Will they feel more honored if Jeep (STLA) sends them some $$$
Ugh

Probably not worth it. Better off just winding down the brand.

It's a dumb brand name anyways - what does an American Indian tribe have to do with a car? There's no connection there. This isn't at all like colleges whose mascots are named after local tribes.

It's a Jeep. It can find its way anywhere in the wilderness - like a Cherokee.

I hope they come out and say they are proud of the association with the great Cherokee history and believe there isn't a better name possible for a vehicle to explore the world.

Well, Jeep says it's "to honor and celebrate Native American people for their nobility, prowess, and pride."
Wouldn't it be cool if they forced jeep to issue a recall on all Cherokees and Grand Cherokees regardless of age to remove and replace both the name plate and the owner's manual with the new name they agree to.
Jeep was able to use the name for over forty years. AMC even worked an agreement with the Cherokees about it, but now all of a sudden amidst cancel culture it's "offensive?" GTFO, they had over 4 decades to argue against this and kept quiet, just like they did about "High Cheekbones" Warren up until around 2018.

Car companies name their cars after things they're not connected to all the time. Did you actually think Chevrolet evoked images of living in coastal California with the Malibu? No, they evoked images of a cheap sh*tbox you'd get from a rental car company. The Chevy Citation? The only citation you'd get driving one is from abandoning it on the side of the road. I won't even go into the name Probe, wtf was Ford thinking with that one?

I'll give them a pass. IMO, if something is named after a group and the group itself is offended, be it 40 years ago or today, then I can see changing a name. Now, if some idiot that isn't part of that group decides to be offended for that group then, well, that person can fk right off.

And I suspect that's the case. I have a lot of family in Oklahoma, thus they have quite a few friends who are Cherokee or are close to many of them. In fact, one relative, who is part Cherokee, once drove an aptly named car. If they were offended by this or the name, that's news to me and anyone that knew them.

I can't speak for every member of the tribe, but I'm pretty sure it's never bothered them until now when the chief jumps on the cancel culture bandwagon.

The Malibu was actually a good car in the 60s & 70s when it was first named. It was when they created a new downsized model in the 80s it went to pot.
Rename the damn thing the Jeep Cowboy or Buffalo Bill or Custer or Homesteader.
