Opening day is here! VCU is picked to win the A-10 this season, so this should be a highly competitive weekend of play.

The Seahawk lineup for opening day:

1. Brooks Baldwin CF
2. Jac Croom 2B
3. Cole Weiss 3B
4. Ron Evans DH
5. Dillon Lifrieri LF
6. Trevor Marsh RF
7. Kip Brandenburg 1B
8. Taber Mongero SS
9. Kevin Pitarra C

SP: Landen Roupp

I was way off on my guess, lol. Lifrieri, a redshirt freshman and transfer from San Diego, earns the nod in LF. Mongero is a redshirt sophomore and Pitarra is a talented redshirt freshman.

They will be facing VCU senior RHP Michael Dailey. Dailey posted a 2.28 ERA in 6 starts in the short 2020 season. He struck out 21 and walked just 6. Prior to that, he was redshirted in 2019 due to injury.
Roupp displaying a nasty curveball and gets a looking strikeout in just 4 pitches on the opening batter.

Great way to open the season!
2 groundouts make for a quick 1-2-3 inning for Roupp.

Hawks coming to bat in the bottom of the 1st, no score.
A 1-out double for Croom and a well-earned walk for Weiss (he fought back from a 1-2 count) and the Hawks have 2 on, 1 out for Evans.

18 pitches already for Dailey.
Pitch # 22 from Dailey gets away from his catcher on a high fastball, both runners advance! 2nd and 3rd, 1 out. Evans still at the plate.
Following an Evans K, Lafriere drew another walk to load the bases with 2 down. The 2nd walk of the game against a starter in Dailey who only had 6 walks in 6 starts last season.

However, Marsh K's on 3 pitches ends the inning, leaving 3 on base. At least we forced a lot of pitches out of Dailey.

No score, 2nd inning.
Another easy 1-2-3 inning for Roupp, including 2 K's on beautiful breaking pitches. Very impressive start for our ace.
Dailey gets a 1-2-3 inning of his own against the Hawks, K-ing Brandenburg and getting both Mongero and Pitarra to fly out.

Dailey likes to use the breaking pitch early in the count, and has good command of it. He's gotten ahead in the count without throwing fastballs a couple times in his outing thus far.

No score, top 3rd.
vcu up 1 zip.
Not a fan of our all blue unis. Looks like a softball team (sorry 33).

VCU gets on the board first in the 4th on a solo HR.

However, the Hawks get a leadoff double in the bottom of the 4th from Ron Evans. Hopefully they can answer here.

1-0 VCU, bottom 4th.
Brandenburg with some clutch 2-out hitting drives an RBI double to left field. Tied up 1-1!
After Mongero works a walk, Pitarra comes through with an RBI single past the SS to give the Hawks a 2-1 lead!

Great work by the bottom of the order there. Baldwin to bat.
Baldwin pops out to end the inning. 2-1 Seahawks, top of the 5th.
VCU put up 3 runs in the 6th and their 4-2 lead has stood up through 7 innings.

Top 8th.
Bottom of the 9th, and Mongero earns a leadoff walk against VCU's closer, Watson, who had entered in the 8th inning.

1 on, no one out, VCU up 4-2.
Pitarra K's. Top of the lineup now up.
Baldwin rips an opposite field shot to LF, it hits off the wall and Brooks slides into 3rd with an RBI triple!!!

4-3 game. Tying run just 90 feet away with 1 out!
Base hit up the middle for Croom! We're tied up, 4-4!!
Croom gets to 2nd on a Passed Ball! Winning run in scoring position for Weiss. 3-2 count.
A breaking ball comes in to hit Weiss!

Still 1 out. Freshman Jack Howell, a lefty batter, will pinch hit for the righty Evans against VCU's righty pitcher.
