I guess people out of power, boiling water to drink, pale to compare to out-of-division C-USA bball games
Are you sure? I thought they were being moved to Saturday and Sunday. No game Friday at Rice for sure.
ESPN still shoes the Saturday and Sunday games...

Welp.

Covid, not even weather related.
That sucks but for anyone who wants to make a snide comment about Rice, please keep a couple of things in mind. First, these are the first games the men have canceled in conference play despite having some players out with covid. We've had some key players out and have kept playing games during that time.

Secondly, with Houston's crazy weather this past week, there is a good chance that some Owl players were staying in apartments without electricity or water. It wouldn't shock me if a new Covid case arose out of emergency, makeshift living conditions.

Sorry Marshall folks as I know you've had trying weather conditions the last week too.

Didn’t realize it was a competition?

Oh and my neighborhood just got power back on last night after it went off last Thursday and several on my street still have no power. My frustration is the constant cancelation of the things we love to take us away from our troubles yet the troubles keep kicking us down.

Chalk this up as another "Strategic Cancellation".

Think about it. If you're Rice (12-10, 6-8), why take another azz whooping at home in front of the home town fans when you can just cancel the rest of the season? Look for Rice to cancel next week's road game at LA Tech too.

Think about it from the Rice coaches' perspective. It's been a disappointing year for Rice, who was projected to have a good team this year. By cancelling the rest of the regular season, he finishes the regular season with a winning record (12-10), instead of absorbing 4 consecutive losses (to Marshall & LA Tech) to close the season 12-14. And even with a loss in the 1st round of the CUSA tournament, Rice can finish no worse than 12-11 for the year if they cancel the Marshall and LA Tech series'.

It's sad that it has come down to this, but it is what it is.

Stop the nonsense. Rice players go to an obnoxiously expensive school that charges 65K per year for tuition. They can certainly afford to put the players up in a hotel or at the coaches homes or make other arrangements for 3 days. Everyone else seems to make it work. Quit being an excuse mongerer.

How high do you think Marshall and LA Tech basketball are on the list for people in Texas that have been experiencing around the clock freezing cold temperatures, ice, and snow all while being without electricity for several days, and now have to boil their potable water (with what fuel source)? My guess is that they have greater needs and priorities right now to be concerned about, and if there are a few hotels available that have heat and water, they don't want people coming in from other states to fill them up.

The record cold was just a ploy so Rice could avoid playing Marshall

You know Louisiana is going through the same storm. Not as many power outages as Texas but that's only because we're not on the same power system. Also the two hurricanes this past year in Louisiana took out many of the weak trees and limbs that would've caused widespread outages. That said plenty of people in Louisiana were without power and water and still are.
Temperature right now in Houston is 32 degrees. In Ruston it's 26 degrees and in Denton it's 22 degrees.

Do you live in Texas? I do. I'm here now. I've been here all week. I know what I'm talking about because I live HERE! It was definitely the coldest temperatures we've had in the 35 years since I've lived here. But your statements are full of hyperbole and exaggeration.

For the record, north Texas --where I live-- was colder than south Texas, where Rice is located. It's like anything else, the news gets blown so far out of proportion, it's absurd. Was it cold: Sure. But nobody said it wasn't cold. Most of the power outages were very short lived and sporadic. And I'm sure someone somewhere had to boil water to drink, but I assure you they weren't in the Rice neighborhood.
