I’ll be curious to see how the faculty respond to another President who didn’t come up through faculty ranks.
I wish him well!

Welcome Dr. Hemphill!
He sure moves around a lot, and has never stayed at one place for even ten years, averaging about 5 years per job.

That kind of history is normally a red flag for employers.

2016 to 2021 Radford University
2012 to 2016 West Virginia State University
2004 to 2012 Northern Illinois University, DeKalb
2001 to 2004 University of Arkansas, Fayetteville,
1998 to 2001 University of North Carolina Wilmington.
1995 to 1998 Cornell College, Mt. Vernon, Iowa.
Talked to a few people who have worked with him at Radford and have heard nothing but good things. Apparently, he’s personable, sharp, and “gets it.”

Does he support athletics?
He’s actually really close with the President of Clemson, so he understands the value sports can bring to the table.
Nothing but the best, if he succeeds, so do we.

If the bulk of these moves were promotions it's not so much of a problem. I'm guessing he's a climber and will be taking a presidency at a larger school after a few years.

Hope he loves sports

Question mark around going from Prez of W.Va. U to Radford??

Several service positions with NCAA, Big South. Looks sports oriented
Im also surprised by the fact that he isnt from the faculty fraternity. But as a person who works for a University, that doesnt bother me in the least. In fact, it could be a good thing as long as he still places academics and research as the top priority. He certainly did good things at Radford. In fact Ive been bothered by how VCU and GMU seemed to be pulling ahead of us, while Radford and Longwood have been catching up to us. I guess he was part of that, so maybe he can accelerate and expand ODU's reputation and desirability as well. He also seems to have quite a bit of experience in launching and expanding health sciences programs which is a big deal at ODU right now, and with the hopeful merger of EVMS and ODU may soon be THE top priority. He also seems to have a handle on fundraising so thats good. The only questions I have are: 1. how will he be with getting support from the State, 2. will he put an emphasis on student life and the on campus experience (like Runte), 3. will he support the athletics programs sufficiently and 4. Can he improve our academic standing, and get us to move up in the USNWR rankings. Hopefully he knocks all those out of the park, and does such a great job he moves on to UVA or someplace in 4 or 5 years. Welcome Dr. Hemphill. I wish you all the best, and I hope you love being a Monarch.
President Hemphill is student-focused and a strong supporter of athletics. His son is a senior playing on the Radford's basketball team.

He and his wife are very personable. I had the opportunity to meet them during his visit to ODU last week. I wish him great success!
the CV says WV State

Great to know. Your opinion carries weight with me. If M4L is happy, so am I.

I would certainly make the move from West Virginia State to Radford.
When does he start?

Correct. He will shadow Broderick until the fall, in attempt to create a seamless transition. With his personal family involvement in college athletics, I'm hopeful this bodes well for the state of ODU athletics.
