With us playing each other next week the coaching situation came to my attention.

What was the thought process for the fans? Was Mark a fan favorite for the position, or was it more Tayako since he had a more recent history with UNCW?

Has Mark been back to UNCW as a head coach?

Mark didn't get much thought here, it never really got past Siddle because he was here during Keatts and many thought he should have been hired last time. But so far, one is winning, one is not, so there's that. Excuses aside, results matter.

While I was a big fan during Marks era with UNCW, I gotta admit I did not remember him. I did recall the solid rivalry between our two schools in the 80s and 90s. IMO, at one time we had the best two home courts during the Lefty years.

The good 'ol days......

As I recall, Takayo Siddle and Rob Burke were the only 2 finalists for the job. If that tells you anything.

Coach Byington's coaching style may have played a factor too. The style of our last 2 HC's, and the kinds of players recruited, was uptempo. I know Byington's system is more of a half-court one, involving spreading the floor and using a lot of pick-n-roll to create driving lanes. But he does like 4-guard lineups too, so perhaps there's more similarity to our scheme than initially thought.

Either way, I thought at the time, and still do, that both JMU and UNCW made excellent hires. I would have been more than happy if Byington had been a finalist here and ended up getting the job. He's a UNCW alum and we're all proud of him.

To answer your last question, no, Byington had not coached against UNCW as a HC. Tuesday will mark the first time he's coached against UNCW. It'll be a nice return to Trask for him.

Does UNCW allow any fans to games?

Does UNCW allow any fans to games?
Players families, and a few select season ticket holders every game. Not many.

Sound about like us. We're allowed 250 in attendance (including band, cheerleaders, etc.)

The most we've had is about 50 and the band/cheerleaders/etc have not been at the games to this point in the season.

It's funny to me that JMU (250 per game) and UNCW (20) are # 2 and 3 in the league in attendance, respectively.

Charleston (1,439 per game), of course, is # 1.

08, i know you are at every game. Do we even have Cheerleaders and Dance team there? what about band? Haven't seen nor heard them on the broadcasts

I mentioned it in the previous post. No, none of them have been at any of the games to date.

Byington inherited the preseason POY candidate, UNCW had one player honorable mention in Sims, and he's now out for the year. Quite a difference in the roster each was left with.

He also inherited the POY that with his teammates finished last in the CAA last year. Matt Lewis couldn't find a shot he didn't like. It's amazing how Mark has turned him into a team player. We were projected 9th in the preseason polls only ahead of W&M, so it's been a pretty amazing turn around for our program. It's real early in a covid season, so who knows? It seems like 2/3s of our originally scheduled conference games have cancelled.

We've been down for the most part of 2 decades but we go back and forth on our boards how long it takes to turn around a basketball program. I've always claimed a solid coach can have an immediate impact as shown by Matt Brady, and not Mark.

March is what matters in the most wide open (then ever) CAA. And let's be honest - this could be the worst caa in history. On the bright side, opportunity for all.

You missed the point, as usual. They had the preseason POY and we had one honorable mention player who is now out. We play each other this weekend and one team will still have the preseason POY on the court while the other team will play without their honorable mention player. We didn't have much to start, and now we have even less.

As i've said before, and you chose to ignore, with Sims out it is what it is. But BEFORE Sims was out, we lost some games we should have won, period. You are like the Siddle excuse train. somewhere CB is reading saying damn, i wish they made excuses like that for me. AND....... Byington is also getting substantial minutes from several freshman too. (his recruits) So let's not diminish what he's doing just because of who he inherited.

Whomever the CAA champion is, they are looking at a 16th seed

Not diminshing what he is doing at all. He's doing a great job and I know JMU fans are happy with him. That's great. But i'm not the one trying to somehow compare two coaches and two teams who are operating under very different circumstances.
It’s not fair to evaluate at this point. Hawks have had a ton of injuries and then lost Sims. Phillips hasn’t played at all. Roster lacks size too at the moment. Year 2 and year 3 will be more indicative because recruiting matters and was a big reason why Siddle was hired. And, it is a proven system IF you have the right guys and have enough of them.

Who’s the lacking size on? Just curious
