Roupp Named CAA Preseason Player of the Year

Seahawks picked to win the South Division of the CAA

WILMINGTON, N.C. – Red-shirt junior righthander Landen Roupp was picked as the Colonial Athletic Association's Preseason Player of the Year as UNCW received seven of a possible eight first-place votes from the league's coaches to win the South Division of the Colonial Athletic Association for the upcoming season.

Joining Roupp on the league's preseason all-conference squad were infielder Cole Weiss, outfielder Noah Bridges and reliever Adam Smith. Luke Gesell, a pitcher, was selected as an honorable mention honoree.

The Seahawks were picked to win the South Division which includes, in predicted order of finish, the College of Charleston, Elon, James Madison and William & Mary.

As a junior in 2020, Roupp fashioned a 2.00 earned run average and a 3-1 mark in four starts before the season was halted. Over the course of 27 innings, Roupp struck out 30, walked seven and held opponents to a .200 batting average.

Weiss and Bridges were off to strong starts at the plate in 2020, hitting .305 and .290, respectively, while Bridges collected eight stolen bases.

In his first season as a fulltime pitcher, Smith notched three saves over the course of seven appearances. He struck out 14 in 11.1 innings and opponents hit just .227.

Gesell compiled a 3-1 mark while making four starts in 2020.

Northeastern was picked to win the North Division with eight first-place votes.

The Seahawks open their second season under the direction of Head Coach Randy Hood on Feb. 19 with the first of four games that weekend against VCU.
