(01-28-2021 04:27 PM)robertfoshizzle Wrote: [ -> ]Another data point to add to the above; Brannen's first year at NKU was also their first year in the Horizon League, and they were still ineligible for postseason play, as it was the final year of their transition to Division I. The team went 9-22 that season. Brannen's 2nd season at NKU, they won 24 games and went to the NCAA tournament. Assuming guys like Eason and Harvey stick around, I think we can be pretty good next year and beyond.

Every team has dealt with COVID issues to some extent but what has become incredibly clear is the team's it disproportionately affects are teams without much experience with a ton of recent roster turnover. I keep pointing to Duke and Kentucky who have experienced huge backslides. Those teams depend on getting young talent to gel together and it's just really hard when you don't have the same offseason and aren't used to playing together. Turnover over nearly the entire roster in two offseasons put UC in an already precarious position, but with the COVID issues it has been near impossible. I just can't take much from this season.

I agree to a certain extent. But why was the coaching staff over the summer trying to build the most difficult non-conference schedule when they should have known the possible issues a covid season would bring. Why did they not host an MTE and play buy games.

My concern is the stuff they could control or reasonably forecasted they screwed up. Hopefully the learn going forward.

You see more value in playing bad teams than I do. Their record would certainly look better that way, but I think their struggles and learning to play together against quality competition has value even if it comes at the expense of a worse season.

Young team and covid season, yes. Established team and a normal year no. Personally I would go soft until this staff knows for certain it has the type of team that can handle a intense non-conference schedule. In normal year you still need around five real games but 6 to 8 easy wins are necessary if your team is still learning.

Not sure I would have done anything differently than Brannen did regarding pre-conference scheduling this year.

Tennessee was a return game already scheduled. X is set annually. Louisville was a series we've been begging for since its departure from the AAC/old BE and Brannen's relationship with Chris Mack appears to have opened that door. Georgia isn't exactly an SEC team that strikes fear into opponents and could reasonably have been a win had UC been performing at an expected level.

I think most of us have welcomed an upgrade in the pre-conference scheduling. And it is almost necessitated by the AAC underperforming right now with only Houston ranked.

For UC to maintain its "high major" relevance while playing in a marginal conference, it is necessary to schedule the best OOC opponents it can find. Kudos to Brannen for moving in this direction. (And sorry for the firing if he doesn't win his share of the games.)
Yet another weekend without UC basketball. Even as bad as the season has been, I miss watching them.
I'm all for forgetting about the beginning to this season, but this is ridiculous.
Serious question...when is the next non-postponed UC game? I sorta quit paying attention. Can’t say that has been without some benefits in extra time and improved mood.
I figured I sacrificed the start of the UC basketball season to the great sports gods to help UC football.

Now I am sacrificing the rest of the UC basketball season to help next year's UC football season.

I think the game on Thursday is still scheduled to be played.

I'd shut it down. With all the covid crap and players leaving because of the transfer portal. I hope the transfer portal rule ends soon. It hasn't been a great thing for us and xavier seems to do ok with it. Make their coach get out and recruit high school kids again. This covid stuff has slammed UC
It's really odd that 5 of our 6 postponed games haven't been rescheduled yet.

It's like the athletic dept is strongly considering throwing in the towel on the season and not attempting to complete the full conference schedule.

Any home games we had will more than likely not be made up. This week’s game in Philly was supposed to be our home game. The league gave Temple the option to bring it to Philly. I don’t see a home game coming back.
I dare say that if we were 9-1 and ranked, we'd be a lot more healthy than we are right now.

The bean counters are seeing $ every game that's not played.
I hope some of the games get made up.
Shut it down. That way we only lose 7 games. Fire Brannen hire Pitino.

Yep, it's been a bit surreal seeing January pass without some game watching opportunities. The losses were painful--they always are for fans. But I was enjoying watching the younger players who we hope will form the nucleus of a winning team next season. Eason and Harvey show great promise and others show signs of developing into solid contributors. The next question is, what will this team look like with a month of regular practice/game cycles pretty much wiped out?

I don't think we have the budget for compliance to keep Pitino in check. I don't want a dirty program... takes some luster off a program's accomplishments when they get scrubbed from the NCAA record books.

Agreed; Pitino's star has fallen and his best years are in the rear view mirror.

Too bad that in a thirteen year tenure, Mick never developed a single assistant coach who could be a capable successor.
Are we playing on thursday?
rough times for coach brannen. rough times for college hoops. an unprecedented era wherein everyone gets a mulligan. still like the idea of this team

He did develop (maybe) one, but then he touched a sleeping woman on a plane.

You really would have wanted a Cronin disciple? Come on. Had we wanted someone like Cronin we could have just kept him.

I thought Brannen did alright last year, and I think he's done a very good job getting talent into the program. This year has been awful, but there are extenuating circumstances, to say the least. I'm not looking to lock him up with lifetime contract or anything, but this Fire Brannen stuff is silly.
