Some may know this already, but Raymorris Barnes, the Stratford principal, was a 4-year letterman in football at Rice.
He either wants that Rice degree ... or lots of early PT and then to the portal seeking the highest bidder. Let's hope it's the former.

In any event, welcome to the Owl family Keanu. We look forward to you doing great things at Rice!
Massive commitment. Local kid, which we've all wanted. A big win for Pera and Greg Howell, who was supposedly the primary recruiter and who I've been critical of in the past. And adds a fascinating new wrinkle to the upcoming season. Could also help with Hicks's recruitment, too. Easier to pick a less-regarded school when somebody else has done it before you.

He is quoted saying "I chose Rice because I feel like they are the ones who can help develop me and get me to the NBA more than anyone else” much to the amusement of twitter. BYU and Utah fans seem the most upset and lots of people believe he's lying and that NIL must have something to do with it. Though I don't buy that because we would not win an NIL battle with the aggies.
I saw the Twitter comments. "Who has Rice ever sent to the NBA"? I'd suggest doing some research before making ignorant tweets.

We wouldn't win a NIL battle with San Jac.
Whatever got him here, this is huge. Hoping Keanu is the basketball program version of Jose Cruz Jr.

Don't think the Trey Murphy experience didn't help. Wouldn't be surprised if Pera asked Murphy to put in a good word for us. HUGE get.

Rimshot
Wow, great news. I'll have to go watch Stratford play a game or two this winter.

He was not. We’ve had 1 other 4 star who ended up going to Nevada. Don’t think we’ve ever had a 4 star make it to campus.

I really think Bobby Crawford was a 5 star out of high school (I see one site that listed him as the #19 recruit in the country). But he was a transfer, so that's quite a bit different. He was a freshman in 1993 (two years after Michigan's Fab 5 with Webber, Howard, Rose, etc.), and the star of that 1993 class. But he didn't play much as a freshman, and then got hurt prior to his sophomore year which really pushed back his development.

I think it's pretty fair to say that this is the highest rated high school recruit we will sign in a long time.

No offense, but I sure hope you are wrong about this.

I suspect Coach Pera and his staff, as well as Dawes and the rest of the team, want and expect Rice to sign more players of this caliber in the future.

Of course, star ratings mean nothing once the team takes the floor. Talent alone is never enough. Talent plus coaching plus hard work plus want to make the difference once the tip goes up.
Checked out Dawes' highlights, looks good, I can see why he's gotten all this interest. Impressions:
- Doesn't jump out of the gym, but has great burst/quickness on the floor, positions body well when working close to basket, nice array of post moves
- Hard to tell from the highlights how good the jumpshot mechanics are, but looks at least serviceable out to the 3pt line
- Frame that will probably handle a lot more muscle
- Moves well, can handle the ball well for his size

Very exciting prospect!

Sure, Dawes is hopefully just the tip of the iceberg. But I meant getting his signature would be the most significant one we've had in 30-35 years (some of Scott Thompson's high school signees were top 100 types too).

Similar to my impressions. Looks more ready to make the college jump than a lot of HS wings because of his frame and build. Not going to blow you away with athleticism, but supposedly is crafty and plays well through contact. Actually has a pretty good shooting stroke. Wouldn't be surprised if Pera sees him as a point forward in the model of Drew Peterson. But at the very least gives you a really versatile piece who's capable of creating and exploiting mismatches. Develop him into somebody who's too big for guard defenders but who's too mobile for traditional bigs.
