If you look at the leader board for passing rating, it's ALL active guys or recently retired. Is there a way to adjust for era? Because many of the guys nest the bottom of the top 25 are meh at best.
Were enough statistical categories kept throughout the pro football era where you could do a passer rating for everyone? And then you have to also factor in rule changes too.
Pirate: Passer rating has been tracked for decades! Plus the components can be retroactively calculated. Your latter point is EXACTLY what I'm thinking about.

I was looking at total passing yards. Fran Tarkenton, Dan Fouts and Johnny Unitas are the only ones in the top 25 who started their careers before 1979. And Joe Montana 1979 and David Kreig 1980 were the only other ones who didn't have most of their careers in the 90s or later and they both had several years in the 90s.
I just don't know what rule and implementation year one would use as the line of demarcation. Is it the QB 'strike zone' or the defenseless receiver?
