I'm sure Vandy can pay more than what we would pay but he'd be crazy not to listen at his age and with a new head coach that needs/wants an experience offensive guy regardless of his standing here. It also doesn't hurt that it's a school in a nice city.

Vandy “can” pay more they we do, I am not entirely sure they do. They were only paying Mason $3.5M after 7 years. I doubt they pay their coordinators seven digits- Denbrock was making close to $600K here.

Part of me says it’s just a symptom of success. Other part of me has bad institutional memories of Minter hiring 5 new assistants every off season.

I'm hopeful that the fact that we were one of the longest tenured HC/OC/DC combinations in CFB prior to this shows that it isn't any internal strife. A lot of people want new challenges every half decade or so...I think if we make the right internal promotions, we will continue to see significant longevity from the new DC/OC hires as long as Fickell hangs sround.

UC IS BLEEDING FOOTBALL ASSISTANTS, and that’s a good thing. Marcus Freeman to Notre Dame, to coordinate that defense, associate head coach and RBs coach Dan Enos to Maryland, to coordinate that offense. Now O-coordinator Mike Denbrock is interviewing for the same job at Vanderbilt.

UC will never be a destination job for any young, talented and hungry coach. The more assistants graduate to bigger (not necessarily better) gigs, the easier it will be to find their talented replacements. You want that ambition in your program, even as it inevitably leads to churn.

That said, is the Vandy job that much better for Denbrock than the gig he has now?

Maryland for Enos?

Enos was way overqualified for the RB coach position. It was always a stop gap till he found an OC position again.
Yeah, I don't mind us moving on from Denbrock. For perception purposes, though, it does make UC seem like a stepping stone football job for... Vanderbilt?

And then the Cincy fan in me wonders if they know something about Fickell that we don't know.

I mean, if Fickell was leaving, wouldn't you think Freeman would stay knowing he was clearly the guy? I don't read that into this at all...in fact, losing assistants to high profile jobs is not a bad thing, it's a good thing. It means more highly qualified or highly motivated individuals will see this as a destination of sorts to increase their own profile IMO.
Why would he stay when it’s just a possibility? His contract probably doesn’t have a buyout for taking a HC job. The schadenfreude from cratering ND’s DC search and having them have to go in house would be delicious.
If Denbrock leaves, do we give him a gold watch with a two-minute dial?
I think the guy is sub-par. I'll drive him out of here, myself.

We have had an unprecedented run of stability on our coaching staff. This was bound to happen eventually.

Wonder what kind of offense Gino would want to run if he got the opportunity?

That sort of goes back to a comment before, Gino comes from the Dan Enos and now Mike Denbrock school of offense. I doubt if he becomes IC he is going to stray too far from their core belief.
Enos used to run one of those plain jane balanced pro style offenses that spun out of the west coast family tree. I can’t see us going in that direction.

I’d have to think hard to come up with who our OCs were when Gino was playing at UC to determine who his other influences may be.

Wasn't Treadwell there his senior year? I mean, in his junior year they ran a virtual air raid if memory serves, and in his sophomore year he threw the ball almost 500 times even with McCleskey in his senior year...so I'm guessing he would be just as into the spread as anyone.

He coached at CMU for 5 years under Dan Enos too...so yeah, I don't think you're going to a see a complete offensive shift. In his last year there under Bonamego they threw the ball almost 500 times in 12 games...so, who the hell knows. I don't think there will be a gravitational shift if he were to be brought in.
I can’t recall who was here Minter’s last couple years.

His senior year Treadwell was OC.

Enos was QB coach
I HIGHLY doubt there is a culture issue leading to these coaches looking at other opportunities. It's just great timing for guys to get paid. It's what happens when a G5 program has success. And I still don't think Denbrock is anything special as a coordinator. If he was, he would have become an offensive coordinator in the FBS before he was 50. He was Kelly's OC for 4 seasons in the 90s at Grand Valley State, and he only got the chance to do the same at Notre Dame for one stop gap year.
Looks like he's still recruiting for us.

He's recruiting, but I'm not sure it's 100% for UC (of course I'm not saying he brings up Vandy specifically). If Anderson has some guys in those classes that UC is interested in, I'm guessing Vandy might have some interest too.

I'm not naive enough to think otherwise, and agree with what you're saying...but I would think Fickell would have the foresight to put someone else in that room if there was a chance for that to be the case.
